The cast of Community recently reunited in order to do a Q&A and a read-through of a classic episode of the show. One question saw Donald Glover suggest that he already has a few ideas for a film about the show if the opportunity ever arose.
6 seasons and a movie was always the running joke of Community and fans have been waiting for that film for many years. With such a talented cast one more outing of the show would be a perfect way to conclude the classic sit-com. But there's plenty of reasons why the franchise should now be left. Here are 5 reasons to finally produce a film and 5 reasons not to.
Shouldn't Be A Film: Busy Cast
The cast of the show is incredibly talented and extremely busy. With huge names like Donald Glover, Alison Brie, and Ken Jeong, it's difficult to get them all back together again.
While they are certainly enthusiastic about the prospects and there's a great bond between them all, it might be near impossible for this shoot to take place and it would be a shame to miss anyone out.
Should Be A Film: Talented Team
Despite how busy they all are, there's no denying just how fantastic all the cast are at their jobs. Each one really embodied their characters and have become iconic for their roles.
Whether it's Danny Pudi's rendition of Abed or Gillian Jacob's controversial Britta, the cast really gravitated towards these scripts and made them their own in a way that no one else could have.
Shouldn't Be A Film: Leave It How It Is
The ending of the show was pretty great. While it perhaps wasn't the total conclusion that fans were hoping for, it's still a pretty satisfying ending to this adventure.
With so many fond memories of Community, it would be a shame to revisit it and perhaps weaken what came before. If a film was to be made it has to be able to improve upon the show in some capacity.
Should Be A Film: Great Crew
The creative team and crew behind the show are also extremely talented. A couple of big names stand out. Firstly, Dan Harmon who is also the creator of Rick and Morty (which has crossed over with Community a few times).
Secondly, the Russo brothers who have gone on to direct many of the films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe could also be brought onto this project, rounding out a great cast and crew.
Shouldn't Be A Film: Missing Audience
There's a chance that the audience for this project is actually missing. With so many years having ed, perhaps the interest in seeing a full movie from this show has dropped significantly.
While streaming services means that there's a possibility that plenty more people have watched the show since its release, it may well be that only a core group of fans actually want to go and see a film about it.
Should Be A Film: Finally On The Big Screen
Fans of the series though will be relieved to finally see one of their favorite sit-coms on the big screen for the first time. The long-running show certainly deserves that recognition.
The series launched various stars and completely changed the genre. It would be appropriate therefore to finally celebrate it through a theatrical release.
Shouldn't Be A Film: Run Out Of Material
It's possible that despite how lucrative these characters are, that the team may have actually run out of material for them. There's been so many great jokes over the years it would be difficult to find new stories for them.
The time jump may have certainly helped, but some of Dan Harmon's best stuff would have also been used on Rick and Morty. Let's hope writer's block doesn't halt this idea.
Should Be A Film: Destiny Fulfilled
The 6 seasons and a movie joke has been a long-running one and it almost seems as if it should be fulfilled in some way. It would be disappointing for this line not to be paid off!
It's something that fans got behind and there's certainly an easy social media campaign to be made around it. It would almost be as if the show was incomplete without that final film.
Shouldn't Be A Film: A New Era
It's a new era in comedy and there's plenty of shows and sit-coms that have taken some of the themes from Community and taken them far further. Whether it's the quirky genre episodes or unique dialogue style.
With so many new series on the block, it may be hard for Community to return with something completely fresh. However, if the team managed to do it once surely they can again.
Should Be A Film: Nostalgia Running High
The nostalgia for the show is running very high thanks to the table read. Fans responded really well to the cast getting back together again and going over a classic episode.
If there was ever a time to announce that a movie could be in the works then this is the time. With the show being binged thanks to quarantine by so many, there's a huge sense of longing to see the show return.
