Kellan Lutz's The Legend of Herculesdidn't sit well with critics, and this continued an unfortunate streak for the actor's movies. Lutz got his big break in Hollywood in the 2006 movie Stick It, and things quickly took off from there. He has since appeared in several movies nearly every year, and franchises like Twilight made him even more familiar to audiences. Unfortunately, leading up to The Legend of Hercules, Lutz was stuck in a pretty grim Rotten Tomatoesstreak, and the 2014 film did nothing to improve it.

After so many years of telling stories on the big screen, it's hard to find a narrative that is 100 percent truly original. Even acclaimed films like Inception will take inspiration from previously produced works to create its own mythos. That's not inherently a bad thing, however, since when in the right hands an adaptation or a spin on a classic trope can feel fresh and exciting.

The Legend of Hercules begins in Ancient Greece 1200 B.C., as the power-hungry warrior Amphitryon (Scott Adkins) leads his army to victory and conquers the land. When Amphitryon's wife Alcmene (Roxanne McKee) pleads to the gods to free the kingdom from her husband's tyrannical rule, her prayer is answered by the goddess Hera - who, through a human vessel, informs Alcmene that she will bear the son of Zeus: a demigod named Hercules, destined to restore peace to Greece. Twenty years later, a fully-grown Hercules (Kellan Lutz) is blissfully unaware of either his true name or heritage, preferring to spend his days either fighting or spending time with his forbidden lover Hebe (Gaia Weiss), the Princess of Crete.

People like to think that Hollywood churns out hundreds of films each year simply to entertain movie-going audiences - but that's just not the case. Sure, there are some independent filmmakers out there making movies for art's sake, but every studio is the business of making movies for one primary reason - money.

The holidays tend to light the cold, snow-covered nights with a warm and hearty glow, but after New Year's, it's pretty much cold, dark, days ahead until the spring thaw comes. Ironically enough, it's during the light, fun, days of summer that we feel most compelled to crowd into dark chilly rooms for movie escapism; the doldrums of winter tend offer very little in the way of quality theatrical entertainment - and the first quarter box office often reflects that reality.
