Oddball television was delivered a tragic blow when FXX announced the cancelation of Simon Rich's hilarious and bizarre Man Seeking Woman, strongly suggesting that the delightfully surreal series was indeed too precious for this world. Though not a total surprise, the news is disappointing for a variety of reasons, but mostly because the series starring Jay Baruchel and Eric André was one of the most original, heartfelt, and laugh-out-loud funny shows on television over the past few years. 5ww22

Normally, when a show makes a major addition to its cast or significant deviation from its usual way of doing things, such changes denote to the viewer that the modification(s) in question needed to happen, either to escape a narrative rut or to reclaim a creative joie de vivre that had gone missing after so many seasons on the air. Given that neither of those issues applies to FXX's wonderfully surreal comedy Man Seeking Woman, the addition of The Killing's Katie Findlay to the cast as Lucy Parker, the soon-to-be (hopefully more) permanent romantic interest to Jay Baruchel's titular woman-seeking man, stands as a testament to the show's inventiveness.

Now that the holidays are almost over and the New Year is nearly upon us, it's time to take a look at all the TV coming our way in 2017. Winter is the perfect time for television to ramp up its offerings, giving everyone convenient excuses to keep out of the biting cold and snow to enjoy the new and returning shows in the offing from the broadcast and cable networks, as well as streaming services and channels.

FXX, a comedy-focused spinoff of the established FX, officially came into existence at 7 a.m. on September 2, 2013, and the first moving image ever shown on the network was an apt one: a video of Danny DeVito being “birthed” out of a leather couch and tumbling to the floor. The video was from the 2010 Christmas special of hit comedyIt’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
