Filmmaker Howard Deutch has spent decades carving his own unique path through Hollywood, directing film and television across a variety of genres. Back in 1986, though, he only had a handful of music video credits under his belt when he was offered his first film: Pretty in Pink, written by the king of 1980s teen cinema, John Hughes. The rest, as they say, is history, and Deutch would collaborate with Hughes again on a spiritual successor, Some Kind of Wonderful. Walter Matthau is widely recognized as one of the most talented character actors in the history of Hollywood. After five years spent honing his craft on the small screen, Matthau made his feature film debut in a 1955 Western entitled The Kentuckian. A decade later he won an Academy Award for Best ing Actor in the 1966 release of The Fortune Cookie.

If the recent fall season taught us anything about the status of broadcast television, it’s that there’s a growing concern over the lack of originality across all genres. Networks covet the hits of their rivals, which leads to a unique twist on a very familiar story. Cue: a rush towards cable TV. The response? “You like comic book movies? We all have comic book-based TV shows.”

CBS' fall 2014 lineup doesn't have a lot of risk, but when you're consistently at the top of the mountain thanks to a stable of sturdy procedurals and broad comedies, why change course?

When Friends ended in 2004, most predicted that Jennifer Aniston would head out into the bright lights of a film career, but no one knew how the other "friends" would fare when it came to landing more work. Matthew Perry has been a semi-steady presence on the small screen, starring in the Aaron Sorkin-penned NBC drama Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, though it only lasted two seasons. He then co-created ABC's Mr. Sunshine, though that too was canceled, this time after only one season. Most recently he returned to NBC forGo On, a sitcom somewhat unfortunately focused on grief counseling, but again the network pulled the plug at the end of season 1.
