The basic idea behind the Nemesis System is that, if you are defeated by an enemy in the game, that enemy will be promoted to a bigger threat. This way, the game was able to construct mini-bosses that felt tailored to your specific playthrough and with whom you would have a personal vendetta against. The rumors come during a difficult time for the studio, which suffered a major loss with the release of Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League in 2024. With that in mind, the new Batman: Arkham game will not only serve as another entry in a beloved series, but as a chance at redemption for a highly respected development studio.

Rocksteady's possible return to making a Batman: Arkhamgame has people talking, but one exciting feature is missing from the discussion. While this resulted in a greater sense of control over the gameplay experience, the Nemesis System seems to have been left behind after negative about Shadow of War’s monetization tactics and Warner Bros. patenting the system.

Like a lot of people, I haven't had the luxury of jumping into Batman: Arkham Shadow, but the frustrating reason that I can't might not be an entirely bad thing. As the first title to bear the iconic Batman: Arkham name in years, Arkham Shadow could be an exciting return to a richly atmospheric take on Gotham. The problem is the platform. As a VR title, Arkham Shadow is already off-limits to many, and its status as a Meta Quest 3 exclusive means that the majority of VR fans don't even have the right hardware.

The Batman: Arkhamseries is one of the best superhero franchises in gaming, but what order should these games be played in? Superhero games and Batman games have existed for decades, but the quality of them has always varied. While there were plenty of good superhero games in the early 2000s like Spider-Man 2, Batman always struggled. Even the Batman Begins video game was rough despite being based on a universally acclaimed film. It's hard to imagine a bad Batman game after seeing how Rocksteady perfected the formula for such a thing in 2009.

It sounds like a new Batman: Arkhamgame might be in the works at Rocksteady Studios, but as exciting as that could be, it's incredibly unlikely that the game will be the one that I personally want. The Batman: Arkham series is iconic for a reason, elevating the superhero genre with engaging stories, fluid combat, and a richly atmospheric take on Gotham City. More recent successes like the Marvel's Spider-Man games for PS4 and PS5 draw a lot of inspiration from Rocksteady's titles, and I'd argue that the newer alternatives still lose in a direct comparison.

Rocksteady Studios may have dropped the ball with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League but the latest rumor regarding the developer is great news for fans of the Batman: Arkhamseries. The games starring the eponymous superhero that kicked off with Arkham Asylum are regarded as some of the best action-adventure experiences the video game industry has ever seen, which is what made Suicide Squad's lackluster gameplay all the more disappointing. Ever since Arkham Knight, which was released in 2015, fans have begged for a return to a form and it turns out they could soon get their wish.
