There have been several rumors and fan requests for a remake of the classic Chrono Trigger, and for a few days, it looked like a remake might have accidentally been confirmed by co-creator Yuji Horii. Unfortunately for fans, it appears this alleged remake comment was all a misunderstanding. During the Napoli Comicon, fans in attendance alleged that Horii slipped up and "confirmed" a remake of Chrono Trigger. Other fans in attendance refuted these claims, and now Square Enix has made an official statement about the incident. 1a3q3k

Yuji Horii, responsible for writing the scenario and supervising development of the legendary Chrono Trigger, has accidentally let it slip that a remake is in production. The Super Nintendo classic is often held among the greatest RPGs of all time, and though it has seen a handful of re-releases, has never been fully remade.

The classic RPG Chrono Trigger turns 30 this year, and Square Enix plans to celebrate the beloved game throughout the year. The time-bending title was originally released on March 11, 1995 for the SNES system, and is considered to this day by many to be one of the best games of all time. Developer Square Enix plans to commemorate the iconic game with several "projects" in the year, to thank fans for their dedication and love over the years since the game's initial release an impressive 30 years ago.

More than two decades have ed since the release of Chrono Cross, and a third mainline entry in the Chrono Trigger series was planned, but those plans fell apart in favor of online and mobile games. Square trademarked the name Chrono Break in 2001, and three Chrono series developers, Hironobu Sakaguchi, Masato Kato, and Takashi Tokita, were slated to work on the project. It seems a combination of different priorities, internal company politics, and bad timing, prevented the third Chrono game from ever going forward, though some Chrono Break concepts would later be incorporated into mobile RPGs by the former Chrono developers.

The Final Fantasy 7 Remake appealed to the original lovers and new players alike by forgoing traditional JRPG turn-based mechanics and expanding the story and world of Midgar. For those first venturing into the world of JRPGs, the FF7 Remake was an excellent starting point.

If the town development and relationship building of Animal Crossing: New Horizons were laying the groundwork for an archetypal JRPG story, it could be the most heart-wrenching JRPG of all time. The Animal Crossing games are laidback life simulation experiences, and the absence of high stakes is one of the series’ main draws. In New Horizons players venture to a deserted island and develop it into a fully functioning town populated by adorable talking animals. Many typical JRPG stories begin by showing the protagonist’s life in a similarly tranquil, bucolic village, before disaster strikes. These peaceful hometowns are often wiped out in an attack by monsters, or an evil empire, in such narratives, prompting the beginning of the central character’s heroic journey. Some gamers are already pondering what the next Animal Crossing might have instead of islands for its central theme, but very few players would be prepared for the tragedy of an invasion by goblins and orcs.

While many turn-based RPGs have unfortunately not received the popularity and player reach they more than deserve, the release of Fire Emblem: Three Hopes releasing on June 24th, 2022 for the Nintendo Switch will hopefully bring about a new wave of fans and games to the genre.

Whilst modern RPGs like Elden Ring dominate the conversation surrounding the genre, the rise of original titles with a more traditional feel like Triangle Strategy as well as remasters like Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition this year proves that the old-school style has an appeal beyond pure nostalgia.

Radical Dreamers is finally available in English as part of Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition on modern platforms. The original version of Radical Dreamers was released in 1996 and is connected to Chrono Trigger, one of the most beloved video games of all time, so why did it take so long to bring the game overseas? Radical Dreamers was announced during a Nintendo Direct, where it was promoted as being a remaster, along with Chrono Cross.
