Throughout the CSI franchise's 39 seasons and 838 episodes, there have been plenty of memorable moments, but the one that stands out the most happens over the course of three episodes. The CSI franchise debuted in October 2000 when CSI: Crime Scene Investigation premiered, and it quickly became a hit. Millions of people watched the CSI show, inspiring CBS to expand its universe. Its success resulted in the network ordering the first spinoff, CSI: Miami, in 2002, and the second one, CSI: NY, in 2004. CSI was a cultural phenomenon that forever changed the course of TV (in numerous respects).

Ted Danson may best be known for portraying Sam Malone on the beloved series Cheers, but Danson made waves when he appeared in CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. Sam Malone is one of only three characters to appear in all of Cheers’ 11 seasons. Since Cheers ended in 1993, Ted Danson has gone on to have leading and starring roles in renowned television shows, earning multiple nominations at the Primetime Emmys and the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Medical examiners are often forgotten about in film and television, as the more glamorous role of detective is usually centered in crime stories. However, there are certain TV shows that feature strong medical examiner characters, sometimes even putting them in the role of protagonist. Often serving as foils to the brash and action-oriented detectives, the medical examiner's character is often logical and dedicated to finding the truth. Many of the most exciting crime dramas give their doctors and scientists the chance to step outside the lab and see what it's like in the field.

Criminal Minds: Evolution and CSI: Vegas both revived popular 2000s crime shows, but only one has been canceled.

CSI: NY was led by Gary Sinise, and the show perfectly flipped one of his best roles. There have been five CSI shows, each with a signature approach to the CSIformula. CSI: New York centers on Detective Mac Taylor, played by Sinise, and his team. The New York spinoff focus on the characters' personal lives and interactions with each other was widely praised at the time, while the inner city atmosphere and muted color palette give its storylines a grittier feel, with many of the CSI: New York cases being more disturbing than those in the other spin-offs.

On October 9th, 2008, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation broke the hearts of longtime fans by doing the one thing I never expected the show to do; killing longtime character, Warrick Brown. CSI had a tried-and-true formula, and very rarely strayed from a satisfying conclusion in each episode. So, with a show that established and reliable, fans like me didn’t expect the season 8 cliffhanger, where Warrick was shot in his car, to actually result in the character dying. “For Warrick” flipped the usual CSI script, and made its most memorable episode to date.

While CSI has a lot of classic episodes, the show’s best outing aired in 2005 and came from a notable guest director, Quentin Tarantino. The CSI franchise has been home to plenty of gruesome stories, but one stands out as a particularly impressive tour de force. The two-part season 5 finale, “Grave Danger,” is arguably the most tense storyline in the show’s long history. While some of CSI’s best episodes were great thanks to their memorably nasty deaths, this two-parter is notable for featuring less gore than viewers might expect from the series. However, this doesn't make it any less disturbing.

Although CBS has sadly canceled CSI: Vegas after only three seasons, that doesn't mean the CSI franchise is dead, seeing as the universe contains several characters who could (and should) receive spinoffs, even if some of them haven't appeared in any show for more than a decade. There are plenty of CSI shows that many would like to see after CSI: Vegas' cancelation, ranging from series revolving around the return of beloved characters to ones featuring a new cast in a new city. Whatever the case, the latest CSI revival won't likely be the final installment in the police procedural franchise.
