Best-selling author Brandon Sanderson, creator of the Mistborn book series as well as the writer of the final three The Wheel of Time high fantasy novels (after the death of original author, Robert Jordan), has recently revealed his favorite games in a blog post, and Final Fantasy seems to be not only one of his favorites, but also a point of frequent comparison for his own work. While the rumors about Final Fantasy 9 Remake are more intense than ever, as the game celebrates its 25th anniversary, there’s yet another installment in the series that’s deserving of a remake – and it’s not Final Fantasy 6, which also requires some attention. FF9 celebrates its anniversary on July 7, but developer and publisher Square Enix has been putting the classic 2000 game under the spotlight for months on end. The title’s anniversary has received a special website, and there have been several new points of attention, leading to the speculation that the long-rumored FF9 remake may be true.

The massively popular Final Fantasy Japanese RPG franchise is rapidly approaching its 35th anniversary, and its developer and publisher Square Enix has prepared events and multimedia collaborations to celebrate the series’ Coral Anniversary. Perhaps apocryphal stories state that the first game, released on the Nintendo Entertainment System, was originally supposed to be called Fighting Fantasy. That name was already taken by a series of single-player RPG books that launched in 1982. Game director Hironobu Sakaguchi reportedly planned to leave the game industry if the title sold poorly, leading to the Final Fantasy name. The game proved to be anything but final, as the series approaches its sixteenth main numbered entry, and has had dozens of remakes, subseries and spinoffs released over the past three and a half decades.

Final Fantasy X has a hidden affection point system that changes the final Overdrive for Tidus, allowing players to choose their favorite female character, before being railroaded to the conclusion of the story. FF8 was the first entry in the series to be centered around a love story, but FF10 also had a strong focus on romance, with the blossoming love between Tidus and Yuna becoming an important part of the story. The disappearance of Tidus at the end of FF10 then directly ties into the events of the sequel, with Yuna going on a quest to save him.
