It was recently announced that the Nintendo Switch will be getting some sequels to 3DS games. When I saw this, I was pleasantly surprised, and couldn't help but think what other games from the 3DS era might be deserving of a follow-up on the Switch or the Switch 2. There is one game that seems like an easy candidate for a sequel, and I'm honestly a little surprised we haven't seen one yet given the positive reception to the first game. 4b6017

The Nintendo 3DS family of handheld consoles are still used by many today due mainly to the incredible library of games released for them. Features such as dual screens, touchscreen, 3D capability, and the Street all helped set the little handheld apart from its predecessors and the competition. These mechanics were used to great effect for many of the titles that were designed for the system, but even games that did not use its unique technology were still good.

It’s been more than a year since the Nintendo 3DS eShop shut down, but players will soon be able to access their library of 3DS games from their iPhone thanks to a new emulator. Mimicking the 3DS's iconic design, it will offer a split-screen view for players to dive into the Nintendo games on the go, putting well-loved games like Mario Kart 7on Apple's smart devices.

It has been the end of an era for the 3DS and Wii U, but the functionality of the Nintendoconsoles’ games may now be better protected than many initially thought. Nintendo will be discontinuing online services for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U consoles at 4pm PDT on April 8, 2024. While it had previously closed the eShop for these devices, which stopped players from further ing any DLC for their games, this new server shutdown will impact many actual games, as it will remove online play, internet rankings, and anything that involves data distribution.

Roughly one year after Nintendoclosed the e-store for the 3DS the company has now caused the leading 3DS emulator, Citra, to cease development, creating a vacuum for the console’s game preservation and access. The end of Citra is collateral damage resulting from the latest of Nintendo’s aggressive litigation decisions. This is an inarguably tragic result for game preservation. Fans with the resources to purchase increasingly expensive 3DS hardware and game titles on the secondary market do nothing to financially benefit either Nintendo or the original publishers. Nintendo has harmed access to games it has no financial stake in.

Trademark registrations filed at the end of September 2023 suggest the return of Tomodachi Life. An eccentric, Mii-centric social simulator originally released for the 3DS, Tomodachi Life is a truly unique game in its genre. However, despite its success, Tomodachi Life remained stagnant on the 3DS for its entire lifespan. There's never been word of a follow-up or port, but new information suggests that could be subject to change.

Nintendo amiibo (plural “amiibo”) started as Nintendo attempted to the trend of combining physical toys with actual games. The figurines quickly took off and became the craze of the moment. Although the amiibo brands are not as hot as they were in 2015 (a year after their launch), they have still outlasted the competition and are one of the best game figures every Nintendo player should have.

Nintendo has announced that it will be closing the eShop for WII U and 3DS consoles on Mar. 27th, 2023. As of now, all the games are still available to purchase and can be bought so long as the player has money in their Nintendo . Since players cannot add money directly to the Wii U or 3DS anymore they can put money into their Nintendo Switch and that same balance will be usable.
