With the recent release of Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, Team Ninja has expanded its Soulslike offerings, adding to its catalog of Nioh and its sequel, Nioh 2; but between them, one may offer a more complete package. Nioh 2is widely considered a direct the original Nioh, but it may be a good idea to play the original first. Nioh is a series in the soulslike genre that was developed by Team Ninja and initially released in 2017. The second game in the series is going to be a free game on PlayStation Plus in November 2022, and many interested players may be wondering whether they should jump right in or start with the first game.

Team Ninja is revisiting familiar territory with their Soulslike Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. The release of Nioh opened the door for a new subgenre of Soulslike titles, combining the action heavy influence of games like Ninja Gaiden with the dark fantasy elements of titles like From Software's Dark Souls and Bloodborne. With Nioh, the development team took the formula to the Sengoku Era of Japan, placing players in the midst of Japan's Warring States through the eyes of William Adams and an unnamed, player-created protagonist through both games. For their next project, Team Ninja sought a new setting before landing on one that would be familiar to fans of publisher Koei Tecmo's previous work for Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty.

The term yōkai bounces around a lot in popular culture, but few may know what a yōkai is beyond the ways in which modern media portrays them (like anime or games such as Nioh). The term yōkai, which can be broken down in translation to 妖 (yō), meaning bewitching or alluring, and 怪 (kai), meaning suspicious, wonder, or apparition, traces its origins to Japanese folklore. Many English translations have been applied to the word over the years such as monster, demon, spirit, and goblin, all of which fail to capture something of its essence.

Throughout the course of Nioh players will have to go toe to toe with a huge number of deadly enemies. Much like the legendary Dark Souls series, Nioh pits players against seemingly insurmountable odds at every turn and forces them to determine the best way to come out on top. Each enemy will require that players know exactly what the best way to bring their enemies down is.

Like all games in Souls-like genre, there are a huge number of impressive enemies for players to face off against in Nioh. Bringing each of the different types of enemies down will require that players understand that enemy's combat abilities as well as their own strengths and weaknesses. Each fight will necessitate that the player employ a different strategy if they hope to survive in this game for very long.

Players will be forced to fight against a great many difficult enemies throughout their time with Nioh, and each of the enemies in the game will force them to employ different strategies and abilities to bring them down. Some enemies may attack the player quickly and possess greater agility, while others might be large and slow but be able to deplete the player's health bar in one or two hits. Those who hope to survive in Nioh will need to be prepared for just about anything.

Sony has announced that May 2021's PlayStation Now lineup will feature Nioh, Jump Force and Streets of Rage 4. PlayStation Now is a cloud gaming subscription service that allows to stream and play a large library of games. New games are added to the service every month, with the library currently consisting of over 700 titles.

Nioh 2 made its way to PC via Steam last week and instantly achieved meteoric success; it hasn't all been good news, though, since PC players are reporting performance that continue to tarnish the experience. The PC port for Nioh 2 comes roughly one year after the sequel first hit stores for PlayStation 4. Developer Team Ninja also recently launched a native PlayStation 5 version, alongside remasters for both entries in the series and their respective DLC offerings.
