Pacific Rim star Charlie Hunnam recently revealed he would be open to returning to the franchise's Pacific Rim 3 under one very specific condition and it would fix the biggest problem of the sequel. Actor Charlie Hunnam reveals that he's open to returning for Pacific Rim 3 but on one condition. The 2013 movie, directed by Guillermo del Toro, explores an ongoing war between humankind and the Kaiju, in which large-scale robots known as Jaegers were engineered for combat. Hunnam portrayed former pilot Raleigh Becket, who was convinced to the Pan Pacific Defense Corps to defeat the monsters. Pacific Rim: Uprising was released in 2018, but Hunnam's character was absent from the story despite Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi) and others being brought back. The sequel was also helmed by Steven S. DeKnight, with del Toro serving as a producer.

According to Steven S. DeKnight, Pacific Rim 3 would have ended with a connection to the Godzilla vs. Konguniverse. A third Pacific Rim has been highly wanted by fans, but doesn't seem to be happening after the lackluster performance of the second film. However, Pacific Rim is continuing in the form of an anime series next month.

Three years after the second installment, Guillermo del Toro insists he has no plans for a Pacific Rim 3. Acclaimed director del Toro broke into the monster blockbuster realm in 2013 with Pacific Rim, an original sci-fi tale that introduced the concept of Jaegers, giant robots controlled by two human pilots fighting a war against the Kaiju. It starred Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, and Idris Elba. Though not an overwhelming box office success, Pacific Rim performed reasonably well and earned positive reviews from audiences. A sequel, Pacific Rim: Uprising, was released five years later and starred John Boyega.

Pacific Rim and Pacific Rim: Uprising felt like the beginning of a promising franchise, so what are the chances Pacific Rim 3 will happen? Fans shouldn't be ready to throw in the towel yet.

Pacific Rim Uprising director Steven S. DeKnight has a plan to get "the band back together" in Pacific Rim 3. It's not yet clear what the future holds for the Pacific Rim series, now that Uprising has come and gone in theaters. The sequel grossed $290 million in theaters worldwide against a $150 million budget and garnered lukewarm reviews on the whole, making it far from a runaway success. At the same time, Uprising's ending certainly sets the stage for a third showdown in the war between humanity, the Kaijus, and the creatures' other-worldly masters, The Precursors.
