The first-ever anime adaptation of a cult video game series is coming soon with the premiere of Shenmue the Animation. The virtual Crunchyroll Expo on September 4, 2020, announced the development of the animated series. Sega published the original game for the Dreamcast in 1999, followed by Shenmue II in 2001 and Shenmue III in 2019 after a successful crowdfunding campaign. When Shenmue was released, it was the most expensive video game ever developed and turned into a commercial failure. Despite its financial drawbacks, the franchise has developed a cult following.

Sega has announced three new colognes that are based on three of its franchises, with fans soon being able to smell like a character from Shenmue, Yakuza, or even Sonic the Hedgehog. It's unclear why anyone would want to smell like a big blue hedgehog, but Sega clearly believes that there is a market for people who enjoy the aroma of chili dogs.

In a surprise announcement, Crunchyroll and Adult Swim have confirmed co-production of a 13 episode anime series based on the Shenmue video games. Originally debuting on the Sega Dreamcast, the Shenmue series was a highly influential adventure title that was planned to span 16 distinct chapters. It tells the story of Ryo, a young martial artist who must set out from his hometown to seek revenge against Lon Di, a mysterious man who murdered his father. The game only ended up getting one sequel with Sega, released after the fall of the Dreamcast on the original Xbox. Following that, the series went dormant for many years.

The release date for Shenmue 3's first DLC has been announced, and it will feature new playable protagonists. There are currently three planned DLC add-ons for Shenmue 3, and this first one will be entitled "Battle Rally".

It's been twenty years since the original Shenmue was released on the Sega Dreamcast, and eighteen since its sequel appeared both there and on Microsoft's Xbox. This means all the children who were conceived during that first game's ridiculously long conversations are now old enough to vote and go off to war, and yet Shenmue III somehow doesn't appear to have aged a day.

Refunds for the Shenmue 3 Kickstarter are going out soon, but it turns out not every backer is eligible to receive one. The refunds were offered earlier this year after Ys Net announced that Shenmue 3 would be an Epic Games Store exclusive on PC, drawing the ire of backers who had pledged for a Steam copy.
