Few works of fiction capture the true essence of gonzo as it was pioneered by Hunter S. Thompson quite like the Vertigo Comics series Transmetropolitan by Warren Ellis and Darick Robertson. The series follows a journalist named Spider Jerusalem who is a pretty clear Hunter S. Thompson analogue. Jerusalem lives in The City where he writes a column for the newspaper The Word that’s titled “I Hate It Here”. The column focuses on his perception of modern day life as it exists in this futuristic, transhumanist, cyberpunk landscape.

A serious boon for comic readers has come as DC Comics' online service, DC Universe Infinite, has just added a large cache of Vertigo and Black Label titles. Subscribers to the service's Ultra tier now have access to thousands of deep cuts from the DC library.

Legendary writer Grant Morrison is known for their creative imagination, but a scene from their Vertigo series The Invisibles may actually be based on a true story: the time Morrison claims to have manifested the spirit of John Lennon.

The Vertigo series Preacher has an anti-hero named the Saint of Killers that would’ve been the perfect villain for the Marvel Comics hero Ghost Rider. Saint of Killers, who first appears in Preacher #1, was created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon. Ghost Rider has been around longer, being created by Roy Thomas, Gary Friedrich, and Mike Ploog back in Marvel Spotlight #5.
