Supernatural was among the best fantasy shows on The CW, running for an impressive 15 seasons and 327 episodes, and there's even been speculation about Supernatural returning for season 16 — though it would be better to continue its legacy with a canceled spinoff instead. As one project nears its premiere, Jensen Ackles shares his disappointment at one failed Supernaturalspinoff. Over the years, two spin-offs were attempted: Bloodlines, and more recently, Wayward Sisters. Neither came to fruition, but fans still hope a spin-off will arise, now more so than ever with Supernatural itself ending next year. Many fans are hoping Wayward Sisters will have another chance (a show starring Kim Rhodes and Briana Buckmaster, among others), and other fans have proposed or seem open to other spin-off ideas. The CW surprised many with the announcement that it wasn’t moving forward with the planned Supernatural spinoff, Wayward Sisters, but that doesn’t mean the characters' stories have come to an end. The proposed series delivered a backdoor pilot during season 13 of the long-running CW drama that kicked off several storylines for Sheriff Jody (Kim Rhodes) and her fellow hunters, Claire (Kathryn Newton), Donna (Briana Buckmaster), Alex (Katherine Ramdeen), Patience (Clark Backo), and newcomer Kaia (Yadira Guevara-Prip), and it sounds as though the Supernatural writers’ room plans to address those threads and wrap them up within the context of Supernatural season 14. 

It appears as if The CW have given up on the idea of a Supernatural spinoff TV show judging by comments from the network's president, Mark Pedowitz. With season 14 due later this year, Supernatural has proved itself to be one of the most enduring and popular fantasy-based television properties ever created, with a loyal legion of fans across the world rabidly following the adventures of Sam and Dean Winchester. Given Supernatural's long and successful on-screen tenure, it's no surprise that The CW have made several attempts to launch a spinoff series, albeit never with success.

Wayward Sisters,The CW’s planned spinoff of the seemingly immortal Supernatural, won’t go to series after all, according to one of the show’s writers. This was the second time that the network had attempted to spin the story of Sam and Dean Winchester off into an entirely new series, with Supernatural: Bloodlines being the first. That series failed to achieve liftoff after airing a backdoor pilot during the original series’ ninth season, but, seemingly undeterred, the network tried again just a few years later with the seemingly much more marketable Wayward Sisters. However, the question of that series’ future has now been answered in the negative.

The CW's slate of original TV shows and programming is going to expand to Sunday nights during the Fall 2018 television season, adding another day to its regular Monday-Friday schedule in the process.

The Supernatural spinoff Wayward Sisters plans to keep the action and the story centralizedin a single location, rather than send its characters off to explore the open road. Audiences will get their first glimpse during the midseason premiere of Supernatural season 13, which will bring back Sam and Dean Winchester and also Jody Mills (Kim Rhodes), Alex Jones (Katherine Ramdeen), Claire Novak (Kathryn Newton), Patience Turner (Clark Backo) and everyone’s favorite Minnesota-nice sheriff, Donna Hanscum (Brianna Buckmaster). The episode will act as a backdoor pilot for the new series, gathering the group of monster-fighting women and establishing the series’ setting.

Fans of Supernatural have been down this road before: The long-running series once had another spinoff in the works under the title Supernatural: Bloodlines. And, much like ‘Wayward Sisters’, it too was presented as a backdoor pilot, though it appeared late in season 9. That one didn’t go very well, as evidenced by the fact that we’re looking at another potential spinoff just a few seasons later. But after checking out ‘Wayward Sisters’, it’s a good thing The CW decided to on the first attempt, as this feels much more like the kind of show the network should be working on to expand the Supernatural franchise.

The tone of the Supernatural spinoff, Wayward Sisters, won’t be too different from what fans have come to expect from nearly 13 full seasons of Sam and Dean Winchester’s monster-hunting adventures. The first spinoff, Supernatural: Bloodlines failed to make the right impression on both audiences and the decision makers at The CW, but the network is hoping the women-led action-horror series will find success, and one of the ways they aim to achieve that goal is by mostly sticking to a tried-and-true formula.
