For years now, Rockstar Games fans have been scouring the internet for any possible hints about the status of Half-Life 3 has been in for well over a decade, but that will never happen to GTA 6.

Before the 2020 release of Half-Life: Alyx, Valve's acclaimed sci-fi franchise had laid dormant for over a decade. While the VR-exclusive prequel was universally acclaimed, it didn't provide the closure that Half-Life was supposed to deliver and actually posed even more questions about where the series could go next. The opaqueness of Half-Life 3's development has become the subject of jokes and memes through the years, and some fans believe it may never be released. That won't be the case for GTA 6.

While there might be some vague similarities between GTA 6 and Half-Life 3's secretive development, Rockstar would never let its open-world series go dormant. GTA 5 and GTA Online continue to be gold mines for Rockstar's publicly traded parent company Take-Two Interactive even eight years after their launch. The series makes up such a large portion of the company's profits that gamers are all but guaranteed a steady stream of GTA content in the future. It might take years for Rockstar to polish the next chapter of its open-world adventure, but Grand Theft Auto has been so lucrative that Rockstar and Take-Two will likely do everything in their power to keep the gravy train rolling.

The GTA Series Is Too Lucrative To Slip Into Limbo

GTA Online has some fine rewards, but it takes work to earn them.

GTA Online was estimated to be making Rockstar $1,200 a minute during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, some of Twitch's biggest personalities have continued to play GTA 5's online mode in front of hundreds of thousands of viewers. Rockstar turned the franchise into a widely successful game-as-a-service that the company relies on to continuously appease investors, which is not the case for Valve and the Half-Life series.

Valve is a privately held company that makes most of its income through the online game marketplace, Steam, and the online battle arena Dota 2. The Half-Life series remains one of the company's most acclaimed creations ever, but Valve isn't pressured to deliver Half-Life 3 as Rockstar will eventually be for GTA 6. Instead of rushing to release Gordon Freeman's next adventure, Valve seems solely focused on ensuring the series holds up to the standards set up by its past releases. Rockstar has a similarly star-studded track record for Grand Theft Auto, but there will come a time when the developer will need to deliver on GTA 6 to keep gamers interested in the series so it can please Take-Two's investors.
