A newly announced Star Wars' first live-action TV series. The show has also been commercially successful and led to a great deal of Baby Yoda toys, clothes, and other merchandise.
Baby Yoda, officially known as “the Child” on the show, was the clear breakout star of the series upon its release. The part puppet, part CGI creature became one of the most popular memes online in late 2019. This was thanks in part to an iconic scene from director Bryce Dallas Howard, in which drinks a small bowl of soup while wrapped in a cozy-looking robe. The overwhelming cuteness of the scene delighted fans, and Baby Yoda quickly became the centerpiece of The Mandalorian’s merchandising. However, this most recent addition to the Baby Yoda merch collection seems a bit more violent than the rest.
Considering the success of Baby Yoda merchandise, it makes sense Hasbro is thinking outside the box with its latest addition. According to gets bonked on the head by a scout trooper and is no less unsettling.
It may surprise fans that this isn’t the first Star Wars themed Bop It! toy. The company has had success in the past with Chewbacca, R2-D2, and BB-8 variations of the game. Perhaps the surprising popularity of the Child suggested these Bop It! toys could be revised for a new generation. After all, the viewer response to Baby Yoda sured even Disney’s expectations.
That said, for fans who feel a sort of parental connection to Baby Yoda, a game that requires you to slap the Child feels darkly abusive. Whether Hasbro considered the wider connotations of “bopping” Baby Yoda is unclear, but in some ways, this oversight feels a bit hilarious. At least if fans are hesitant to purchase this particular toy from The Mandalorian, there’s a wealth of other Baby Yoda merchandise to choose from.
