The Uth Duna is a large, aquatic monster you can beat in Monster Hunter Wilds, but this creature has several strengths that force you to adopt new strategies. You can't attack this monster recklessly, as it has natural defenses and can manipulate the surrounding environment. Since you can only encounter Uth Duna under certain weather conditions, this Leviathan may become a big challenge.

No matter if you face a Low-Rank Uth Duna or its High-Rank Tempered variant, the monster's properties don't change. For example, a High-Rank Uth Duna is just as susceptible to Thunder damage as its Low-Rank counterpart. When facing stronger versions of Uth Duna, the only thing you may want to change is to have better weapons and armor to contend with a Tempered monster.

Uth Duna Location

Wait For Sudden Showers

Monster Hunter Wilds Scarlet Forest location flooding during specific weather event

The only location where the Uth Duna spawns is the Scarlet Forest during Heavy Rain weather. This monster will not appear when the Forest environment is sunny or overcast, as the waters of the area do not rise high enough to create the creature's habitat. Similar to the lightning storms in the Windward Plains that cause Rey Dau in Monster Hunter Wilds to appear, Uth Duna needs the right weather conditions to spawn.

Monster Hunter Wilds: How To Play With Friends & Lobbies

Monster Hunter Wilds is best played with friends and luckily Capcom makes it easy to find new friends and existing ones for monster-hunting fun.

When storms in the Scarlet Forest raise the water level, there's a chance a Uth Duna will appear as a Large Monster icon on your map. You can use Scout Flies or your Seikret's auto-travel to start heading to the monster's location by selecting its symbol once it shows up. Alternatively, you could force a Uth Duna to appear by posting one of these quests related to it:

  • A Feast in the Deep (2-Star Assignment Quest)
  • Veiled by the Tide (2-Star Optional Quest)

Before you leave on a quest or go hunting in the open map in Monster Hunter Wilds for a Uth Duna, make sure you cook a good meal to give your hunter character some Health and Stamina buffs to prepare for the battle.

Harder versions of Uth Duna can be fought in other quests found much later in the game. However, your first interaction with a Uth Duna will be through the main story as an unavoidable hunt you must overcome to progress. The Uth Duna will always show up in the upper levels of the Scarlet Forest, so explore those areas outside the story to try and hunt it.

Uth Duna Strengths & Weaknesses

Power Over Water But Vulnerable To Conditions

Monster Hunter Wilds Uth Duna monster attacking Olivia NPC hunter during story cutscene

One of the greatest strengths of the Uth Duna is that it fights in the water, an area that slows down the speed of your character. Several of the Uth Duna's attacks cause massive waves in the water that can push back your character, knocking them out of position to land attacks. Uth Duna uses elemental damage to attack your hunter, so try to wear some gear resistant to this monster's Water-based strikes.

In addition to its mastery over its environment, Uth Duna can inflict a unique condition called Waterblight on your hunter. Similar to Bleed in Monster Hunter Wilds and other conditions, Waterblight can be imparted to your character when Uth Duna lands an attack against you. When you have Waterblight, you have far less Stamina recovery speed for several seconds until the status recovers.

While you can wait for Waterblight to disappear naturally during a Uth Duna hunt, eating a Nullberry will remove the condition automatically.

However, despite the Uth Duna's many strengths, it has multiple weaknesses to status conditions. Paralysis, Sleep, Stun, and Poison are just some of the statuses you'll have an easier time inflicting on Uth Duna than on other monsters. With the right weapon or build designed to impart a condition, you can get through a Uth Duna hunt much faster.

How To Defeat Uth Duna

Target Specific Parts And Use The Environment

While there isn't a specific element you can use to make the Uth Duna hunt easier, you can target parts of the monster to deal greater damage. The following parts of the monster are vulnerable:

  • Head
  • Tail
  • Forelegs (x2)

Targeting these areas with Sever damage from a physical weapon will yield the most damage, but be wary of Uth Duna's defensive mechanic. Uth Duna will raise large, fin-shaped veils over its body, giving itself protective armor from most attacks. These veils shield Uth Duna's vulnerable tail, making it impossible to hit directly until you deal enough damage to break through the armor.

How To Fix Crashing In Monster Hunter Wilds - All Potential Causes & Solutions

Monster Hunter Wilds is some of Capcom's best ever work, but unfortunately constant crashes are hurting the experience for many. Want some fixes?

The Forelegs and Head of Uth Duna remain exposed even with the veils, so try to stay around the monster's front when you can. As you attack it, you have to be ready to counter Uth Duna's many attack patterns to find openings in its offense. The table below outlines the strongest attacks in Uth Duna's arsenal, as well as how you can counter each move:

Attack

Description

How To Counter

Body Slam

Uth Duna raises its body up before slamming it down into the water, creating waves if it does this in deeper water.

Dodge behind the monster to avoid taking damage, then quickly dodge again to avoid getting pushed by waves of water.

River Twist

Coiling its body tightly, Uth Duna unleashes its tension to swipe around itself in a 360 spin that damages anything near it.

Move away from Uth Duna or use a weapon that can Block to minimize damage from this attack.

Charging Bite

When a target is far away, Uth Duna swipes a claw into the ground before charging forward, attempting to bite anyone in its path.

Recognize the start of this attack from the initial claw swipe, then dodge out of the way to get out of the monster's path.

Sweeping Slash

Uth Duna uses a claw to swipe at anyone along the same side as the limb.

Block or dodge this attack, then dodge forward to avoid any follow-up slashes from the monster.

Tsunami

Leaping into the air, Uth Duna crashes back into the ground, creating a huge wave of water that damages and pushes back your character.

This attack happens multiple times, so unsheath your weapon and move away to spots where you can avoid the width of any incoming waves.

One of the easiest ways to damage Uth Duna is to use the environmental dam against it during the hunt. Uth Duna always retreats back to a large area of open water that has a series of logs you can use your Slinger to break apart. When the Uth Duna is in front of the dam when it bursts open, it will take tons of damage and likely be knocked over for you to attack.

Don't forget to activate Focus Mode to target the Open Wounds you create on the monster. Breaking wounds will stagger the monster when you use Focus Strike with your weapon in Monster Hunter Wilds, giving you more opportunities to deal damage. By targeting the weak points of this aquatic monster, you'll eventually take it down.

Gather Important Parts To Craft Better Gear

Monster Hunter Wilds multiple hunter characters fighting a Uth Duna

Any version of Uth Duna you defeat will drop different materials based on which sections of the monster you broke. For example, managing to destroy the tail of the Uth Duna beyond its veils will give you a unique material that normally is hard to farm from the creature's carcass. For both High-Rank and Low-Rank Uth Dunas, here's everything you can gather from their defeat, as well as the odds of specific items:

Low-Rank Rewards

  • Aqua Sac (16%)
  • Uth Duna Certificate (8%)
  • Uth Duna Scale (20%)
  • Uth Duna Plate (5%)
  • Uth Duna Cilia (15%)
  • Uth Duna Tentacle (8%)
  • Uth Duna Claw (8%)
  • Uth Duna Hide (20%)

High-Rank Rewards

  • Torrent Sac (16%)
  • Uth Duna Plate (7%)
  • Uth Duna Certificate S (7%)
  • Uth Duna Watergem (3%)
  • Uth Duna Claw+ (8%)
  • Uth Duna Tentacle+ (8%)
  • Uth Duna Cilia+ (14%)
  • Uth Duna Hide+ (18%)
  • Uth Duna Scale+ (18%)

You will likely have to do a Uth Duna hunt multiple times to get the items you want, but thankfully, the same strategies should help you defeat this monster every time. While you may not see every possible reward when you beat Uth Duna in Monster Hunter Wilds, you'll gain materials every time to start crafting powerful gear associated with the creature.
