The Marvel Cinematic Universe is preparing to release Agatha: Coven of Chaos in 2023, and the show promises to be spectacular. After all, if it can match the energy of Agatha's appearance in WandaVision, it will be amazing — especially if it finds a way to top the theme song.
Yet Agatha hasn't been the only chaotic project to be released to a wide audience. There have been many surreal TV shows and events that have been produced over the years, and some of them proved to be the most bizarre projects that have ever existed.
Too Many Cooks
An 11-minute presentation on Adult Swim that initially seemed like a typical sitcom introduction, Too Many Cooks surprised viewers when it just kept going on. It also grew weirder and more disturbing with each ing second. "Just 11 minutes of pure surrealistic fever dream," says Reddit Skyldt.
Eventually growing to parody the worst horror movie tropes and sci-fi movies, the short just gets more bizarre. By the end, viewers are left to wonder what it was they just watched and whether the next video is also a part of Too Many Cooks. Regardless, there certainly were too many cooks in that kitchen.
Happy!
Though the show was recently cancelled, Happy! was a series that had a cult following thanks to its ridiculous premise. Reddit kevn57 accurately describes it as "a live action show about An injured hitman befriends his kidnapped daughter's imaginary friend - a perky blue flying unicorn."
Aiming for dark comedy, the show managed to make the flying unicorn sidekick an engaging character as he follows the hitman through other strange adventures. The show features brutal fights and assassinations, while also showcasing sweet cartoon characters who come face-to-face with real-world deities.
Doom Patrol
Based on the classic DC Comics series, Doom Patrol features excellent villains such as a religious cockroach named Ezekiel and a talking brain. Indeed, there are few shows weirder. "Doom Patrol is all the weird parts of superhero comics that no sane man would ever want to adapt and I'm eternally grateful that someone did," says Redditor hidood5th.
Given that most of the team earned their powers through bizarre circumstances, the show was always going to be strange, but it certainly took it to the next level. With a metal protagonist in a rusting body that occasionally get stuck, even its heroes can't escape just how weird the show gets.
The Shivering Truth
Another Adult Swim production that seems to draw a great deal from Robot Chicken for each episode," says Reddit CuteRush. "Just wonderful."
A show too scary for TV, it managed to excite audiences as much as it scared them. Often tackling heavy subjects like death, birth, and the creation of the universe, the surrealness of the show sures anything else on TV, especially when some episodes address the meaning of life and other episodes tackle the topic of a shirt that bleeds.
Hannibal
It's somewhat remarkable that Hannibal was ever created, let alone by a major channel. "How NBC got away with airing it is a mystery," says Redditor SentientSlushie. After all, the show centers around a cannibalistic serial killer manipulating an entire police department.
The dark topics that the show addresses don't stop there, as every other serial killer on the show introduces new and brutal methods of murder. As the detectives slowly start to feel their quality of life decline, thanks to their involvement with Hannibal, fans also find themselves shaken by Hannibal's charisma, cruelty, and cunning.
Future Man
A comedy show about a time-traveling janitor trying to save the world from destruction, Future Man is utterly bizarre both on paper and in execution, while also drawing star-studded actors like Josh Hutcherson. "I am still surprised this show was greenlit. It is absolutely bonkers," says this Reddit .
While it's a forgotten show that deserves a second chance, many viewers were turned off by the strange narrative. Though it quickly became a cult hit, thanks to its excellent sense of humor, it never got mainstream approval, largely thanks to the fact that it brings video game characters to life to taunt a confused janitor.
Invisible Child
A TV movie that never even hints at comedy, like most other strange projects do, Invisible Child depicts the story of a woman with two children and another — entirely imaginary — child. "Very bizarre, takes itself very seriously," says Reddit 14thCenturyHood.
While the movie was certainly odd, it was also incredibly interesting. As the family's nanny tries to find ways to help the mother and her other children, the family is forced to reckon with the legal system and in-school problems. Still, watching a nanny pushing an empty swingset is certainly bizarre, even if the movie treats the issue respectfully.
Twin Peaks
Though it initially appeared to be nothing more than a Twin Peaks proved that it was would be about much more than a detective uncovering the secrets of a murder. "The whole show was weird and awesome but Part 8 from Season 3 was on a whole other level," says Reddit SalaciousDumb.
With supernatural and surreal elements slowly being injected into the show, it shifted into the bizarre so gradually that fans almost didn't notice until it was dominating every episode. The town of Twin Peaks is revealed to be a supernatural hellscape, and even after attempting to save the initial murder victim, nothing can be done to cleanse it. It's an entirely strange product that eventually brings in ghosts and alternate timelines just to make things weirder.
Legion
A show following a relatively obscure character from Legion depicts the struggles of David Haller, the son of Charles Xavier, as he desperately tries to control reality-altering powers while addressing his mental health. "Seriously for how weird it gets, it has no business being so good," Redditor PunkandCannonballer says.
With villains such as the Shadow King and alternate versions of David Haller running around, the show is as surreal as it is visually stunning. A major success, the show has a strong cult following even after its ending, and many wish that the show could return.
Star Wars Holiday Special
A TV special that many Star Wars fans were looking forward to, the Star Wars Holiday Special proved to be worse than any other Star Wars project that came before it or after. "First time I ever apologized to a gf for trying to get them to watch something," ChewieHanKenobi says on Reddit.
Most of the movie is spent listening to Wookies growling at each other in their own language, while fans are forced to rely on subtitles to understand what was happening. Bizarrely, the movie also ends with a musical number from Princess Leia and features several other musical performances throughout. There's a reason most Star Wars fans despise the project, and it's because of just how bizarre it was.
