Brandon Sanderson has suggested a long wait for sequence 2 of Cosmere universe for decades, and the annual State of Sanderson blog posts have become a reliable way for the author to keep audiences up to date with progress on his numerous titles. Releasing shortly after Wind and Truth's December release, this year's blog post delivered unfortunate news, with him predicting the next Stormlight Archive book releasing in December 2031, meaning a seven-year wait between volumes.

For Cosmere fans, Brandon Sanderson still has plenty in progress to look forward to. Isles of the Emberdark will see its wide release in 2026, and new Mistborn and Elantris books will be hitting shelves before the decade is over. With the increasing number of Cosmere connections in each series, these could very easily incorporate Stormlight Archive characters or references. For now, however, Wind and Truth's ending will be the final novel on Roshar for the time being.

Brandon Sanderson's Next Stormlight Archive Project Will Be A Rock Novella

Horneater Should Be Available Before The Stormlight Archive's Next Arc

After the second and third books in The Stormlight Archive, Brandon Sanderson released novellas to expand on ing characters. Edgedancer expanded on Lift while Dawnshard continued Rysn's story. Though these shorter stories didn't have enormous consequences on The Stormlight Archive, they're still enjoyable and offered some supplementary material during the wait for the much larger full-length volumes. Sanderson's next Roshar story is set to be a novella about Rock and the Horneaters.

The novella's events will occur during the events of Rhythm of War, so it won't provide any updates on the state of Roshar after book 5.

As of now, the Horneater novella was anticipated to have a December 2026 release, but Sanderson has had to postpone the project due to other work, but it's still on his mind and will surely be out before 2031. The novella's events will occur during the events of Rhythm of War, so it won't provide any updates on the state of Roshar after book 5. Still, it's certainly better than nothing, and it could provide additional emotional value to Rock's story, bolstering a fan-favorite ing character.

Given how many Cosmere books fans have been treated to in the past few years, going seven years without a volume of The Stormlight Archive seems awful. It's important for Brandon Sanderson to feel refreshed and come back strong with the next volume, and it'll be fun to receive a lighter installment to his world, especially after the immensity of Wind and Truth. When The Stormlight Archive finally returns in full, the weight of the in-world time gap will feel even more powerful given the real-world wait.
