Warning! This article contains spoilers for Silo season 2's episode 5.Hugh Howey's first Silo book, Silo season 2 walks through two parallel narratives. While one focuses on the shifting political scales in Silo 18, the other revolves around the protagonist, Juliette, who races against time to find a way to return home. Both narratives are equally gripping, but the one unfolding inside Silo 18 seems more intriguing as it offers more questions than answers.

Toward Silo 18's underground tunnel system. In its early episodes, Silo season 2 mentions nothing about the tunnels. However, the second installment's episode 5 finally refers to them, hinting they could become instrumental to many story developments.

Lukas Kyle & Bernard Discovered Tunnels In The Silo Map

Their Discovery Build On One Silo Season 1 Mystery

In Silo season 1, Juliette uncovered a message from George Wilkins long after his death. While the message mentioned myriad things, it also revealed the tunnels under Silo 18 held immense significance. Wilkins also briefly talked about a mysterious door at the bottom of the Silo, which was submerged underwater. Referring to the water body, Wilkins said, "I'm guessing you're wondering what I did about the water. Well, it turns out it was nothing to worry about." These subtle revelations in Silo season 1 suggest the underground tunnels are hidden behind a door at the bottom of Silo 18.

Lukas surprisingly discovers a map for Silo 18, which confirms that a tunnel system connects their underground city to the external world.

Toward season 1's ending, Bernard seems surprised when Juliette mentions the tunnels to him, suggesting he knows nothing about them. His final interaction with Juliette also prompts him to collect the broken bits of George Wilkins' hard drive with the hope that he will be able to retrieve the information in it. Season 2 builds on this when Bernard orders Lukas to repair the hard drive and extract information from it. Lukas surprisingly discovers a map for Silo 18, which confirms that a tunnel system connects their underground city to the external world.

Do The Tunnels Connect To Another Silo?

Lukas only notices that a tunnel seems to head out of their Silo. When Bernard asks him where it goes, Lukas seems as clueless as the Head of IT. However, in Silo season 1, when George shows' Juliette the bottommost level of their Silo, which seemingly leads to a mysterious door that presumably connects to the tunnel system, Juliette also notices a massive boring machine right above the water collected over the door. The boring machine seems big enough to accommodate many citizens of the Silo.

Although Juliette and George know nothing about the machine's purpose, it could probably be used to bore from one silo to another using the tunnel system. Considering its size, it would require a lot of fuel to function. However, given that it is kept right above the door protecting the tunnel system, it is hard not to believe that it holds a lot of importance in the overarching narrative. Since the outside world in Apple TV+'s Silo only seems to have an endless stretch of silos, it seems likely the tunnel system connects them with one another.

How The Tunnels Could Be The Key To Juliette's Return To Silo 18

Juliette Could Use Silo 17's Tunnel To Access Silo 18

Even though Juliette has been deadset on building herself a suit to survive the outside world and return to Silo 18, her efforts have been fraught with many setbacks and challenges. In Silo season 2's episode 5, she even manages to get her hands on a helmet, which is one of the pieces of the insulation suit she must put together to return home. However, if she fails again, she might have to resort to other extreme measures to make her way back because a destructive rebellion is on the verge of breaking loose in Silo 18.

Silo season 2 confirms that there are a total of 50 silos in the show's world.

Silo season 2 confirms that Juliette has gradually overcome her fear of water and learned how to swim. Assuming that Silo 18's design is similar to Silo 17's, Juliette can use her newfound swimming ability to access the tunnel system at the bottom of Silo 17. If the tunnels actually connect one silo with another, she could also use Silo 17's tunnel to find her way to Silo 18. However, to pull this off in Silo season 2's future episodes, she might have to find a way to breathe underwater. Or, if she learns to use the boring machine, she could use it to dig her way to Silo 18.
