If there’s one thing that’s not up for debate, it’s that the Doom Patrol is composed of some of the oddest heroes in the DC Universe. Ever since Niles Caulder founded the team, the team has been a home to outrageous heroes with unbelievable origins, appearances, and especially powers.
10 Lotion the Cat
Lotion hasn’t been with the team long, but his origin story is definitely one of the Doom Patrol’s strangest. Lotion was once the pet of Casey Brinke, aka Space Case. He used to be just a regular cat until he was fed a substance that gave him human proportions. Lotion doesn’t have much in the way of powers or skills, but he’s got claws and is willing to use them when things get tough. Lotion is still with the Patrol as part of their mystic division, the Grave Minders.
9 Ambush Bug
DC’s Deadpool was getting into trouble all over the DC Universe long before he ed up with the Doom Patrol. This wacky jokester has a powerful meta-awareness and the ability to pop up wherever he wants to in the DC Multiverse. To the Doom Patrol’s displeasure, Ambush Bug ed the team when they were stationed on Oolong Island. Bug never took his job seriously. But he was able to put his meta knowledge to good use and stopped Mister Nobody’s upgraded form Mister Somebody by informing him that the Doom Patrol comic book had been canceled in anticipation of Flashpoint.
8 Beast Girl
Beast Girl is one of the Doom Patrol’s newest and helps fill the void left behind by Beast Boy ages ago. Beast Girl’s real name is Kareli, and she was once an average girl until she was affected by the rain of Lazarus Resin in Lazarus Planet. Not only did the resin transform her into a fuzzy purple creature, but it also gave her the power to affect people’s amygdala. In close enough proximity, Beast Girl can induce terror in people or make them feel more calm and gentle. Despite her young age, she’s become a valued member of the revamped Doom Patrol.
7 Space Case
Casey Brinke, aka Space Case, is the daughter of the Doom Patrol’s notable ally Danny. Casey is a comic book character who came to life in stories created by Danny, though the process of becoming ‘real’ made her forget her past as a superhero. Casey’s memories returned and she helped reassemble a scattered Doom Patrol. Casey is a skilled driver, and when she’s piloting Danny’s ambulance form, she can drive through the timestream. She was also a crucial asset during “Milk Wars” when a company called Retconn attempted to homogenize and sell off the DC Universe.
6 Degenerate
Degenerate is another of the Doom Patrol’s newest who were also affected by Lazarus Planet’s global disaster. Degenerate, also known as Maurice, has hard chitinous growths all over his body that he can fortify at will. He can also increase his size and strength, making him a viable field asset. Unfortunately, the only way he can activate these powers is by being an absolute jerk to the people around him. The more mean he is, the stronger he can become. Naturally, this has made him tough to work with, even among the team’s more seasoned .
5 Willoughby Kipling
Forget John Constantine, the Doom Patrol has all the magical help they need with Willoughby Kipling. Kipling is an agent of the Knights Templar and thanks to his experience with the occult, he regularly tracks down and deals with apocalyptic-level events such as the Cult of the Unwritten Book. After a few team-ups with the Doom Patrol, Kipling became a full-fledged member of the squad, leading the Grave Minders. Along with his magical compatriots, Willoughby Kipling keeps magical safeguards on the grave of Dorothy Spinner to prevent evildoers from disturbing her remains.
4 Danny
Danny is a beloved member of the Doom Patrol and one of the most fun places anyone has the privilege of visiting. Danny was once a sentient street that hopped from place to place, making themselves a home for wayward people. However, relentless pursuits have caused Danny to take on a few different forms over the years. In addition to being a street, Danny has been a brick, a bungalow, a world, and even an ambulance that could transport people to an amusement park called Dannyland. Danny isn’t currently with the Doom Patrol, but Danny is always willing to lend a hand to the team when they’re around.
3 Crazy Jane
One of the biggest powerhouses ever to grace the Doom Patrol, Crazy Jane is an army unto herself. Kay Challis is a woman with dissociative identity disorder and after she was hit by the Dominator’s gene bomb, every one of her personas developed a unique power. In an instant, Jane can become Flit, and spirit her allies to anywhere in the world or Black Annis, a fearsome ghoul that can eviscerate her enemies with her incredibly sharp claws. Jane has even developed a new alter ego known as the Chief and has taken to leading the Doom Patrol.
2 Dorothy Spinner
Despite her young age, Dorothy Spinner was one of the most curious heroes to ever the Doom Patrol. Dorothy was a creative girl and loved thinking up imaginary friends. But she could also manifest her friends into reality. In addition to making her friends real, Dorothy could also give them powers. However, the girl’s power was sought out by an evil thought creature known as the Candlemaker who used Dorothy’s power to enter reality and attempt to destroy the Earth. Unfortunately, Dorothy ed on after falling into a coma, and her grave is tended to by Robotman to this day.
1 Flex Mentallo
The Man of Muscle Mystery himself, Flex Mentallo is as odd as he is delightfully charming. In-universe, Flex is the creation of a comic artist named Wallace Sage. But Flex took on a life of his own and became a do-gooding crusader for justice. Don’t be fooled by his muscles because they aren’t just for show. Thanks to his unique ‘Muscle Mystery’ abilities, Flex has near unlimited powers brought on by every flex of his muscles, from telepathy to altering reality around him. But as powerful as Flex is, he’s just a good guy that wants to bring out the best in the people around him.
The Doom Patrol will always be the home of the most unbelievable heroes, and these 10 stand out as the team's most bizarre.
