Reeves was the first black deputy of the U.S. Marshals serving west of the Mississippi River. Born into slavery in 1838, Reeves escaped his owner during the American Civil War and lived with a few indigenous tribes. In 1875, he was later recruited as deputy to preside over multiple territories that housed large populations of Native Americans due to his ability to speak several of their languages. During his time, Reeves arrested over 3,000 outlaws and killed 14, allegedly without ever suffering any serious injury.

Whether or not Reeves will interact with the Dutton's in 1883 season 2 remains to be seen. Although it is a possibility the two parties will cross paths, it is may be unlikely as 1883: The Bass Reeves Story began production as a standalone project. Although no specific details regarding the series' relationship with the franchise have been revealed, it is possible for the fabled lawman to the cast of the previous season.

At the conclusion of 1883 season 1, Dutton vowed to settle his family and build a home where his daughter Elsa Dutton (Isabel May) died. As explained in the series, as well in the original Yellowstone series, which sees Dutton's descendants still living on the land, the territory was once the home of many indigenous peoples. Although Reeves primarily served as a deputy U.S. Marshal in Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas, it is possible for the show to feature an outlaw fugitive that leads the lawman up to Montana and the Duttons' family ranch. Only time will tell if Reeves' story will intertwine with James Dutton's in 1883: The Bass Reeves Story as the series has yet to receive a release date.
