Spoiler alert: The following article contains spoilers from the 2025 One Chicago crossover, "In the Trenches."The 2025 One Chicago crossover consisted of a three-hour special featuring Chicago Med, Chicago P.D., and Chicago Fire as the teams worked together following a deadly gas explosion. The crossover event is the first for the franchise since 2019, as the pandemic prevented any close collaborations between the series. However, the long delay was well worth the wait as the special was so much better than expected.
Immediately after the explosion, Firehouse 51 gets to work, arriving on the scene, putting out the fires, and helping victims get medical attention. With Chief Pascal on high alert, he quickly s Voight at Chicago P.D. for help in transporting the victims to Chicago Med. As the special goes on, more information comes out about the explosion, leading to betrayals and several life-or-death situations in some of the best One Chicago episodes yet.
Ruzek & Kidd Work Together For The First Time In 2025 One Chicago Crossover
The Duo Makes A Great Pair
Among the duos that formed in the 2025 One Chicago crossover are Stella Kidd and Adam Ruzek, who partner up after becoming trapped in an underground train. Kidd and her team were sent to evacuate the train's engers while Ruzek was following a lead as part of his role with the Chicago P.D. The unfortunate circumstances leads to the two of them becoming trapped along with everyone else when the tunnel's ceiling collapsed, as a result of the gas explosion.
With Ruzek's police training, and Kidd's minor medical knowledge thanks to her training with Firehouse 51, the two of them manage to keep everyone calm despite the growing dangers. With parts of the ceiling already collapsed, the surrounding foundation becomes incredibly unstable. In addition, the train's engers are slowly losing oxygen, forcing Kidd and Ruzek to try everything in their power to keep the engers safe and calm, all while trying to figure out who the suspect is.

The 2025 One Chicago Crossover Featured A Pairing I Didn't Know I Needed After 9 Years
The highly anticipated 2025 One Chicago crossover featured a pairing between two veteran characters who’ve never worked together before.
Kidd and Ruzek's collaboration is brilliant given that this is their first time together. Their partnership comes around slowly as Ruzek is hesitant to reveal his information about the suspect to Kidd at first. With so much tension in the air and the fear that the train's engers might not make it out alive, Kidd and Ruzek are still able to conquer their difficulties and work together in the highly stressful environment.
Severide & Kidd Need To Attend Ruzek & Burgess' Chicago PD Wedding
The Romantic Occasion Should Feature Other One Chicago Couples
Given how well Kidd and Ruzek worked together in the crossover, and how important Severide's work has been to the Chicago P.D. in the crossover, it would be great to see Kidd and Ruzek attend Burgess and Ruzek's wedding. The One Chicago shows have demonstrated how each unit in Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D. is a family. An invitation should be extended to several Firehouse 51 as well.
The One Chicago crossover began with Chicago Fire's “In The Trenches: Part 1," followed by Chicago Med's In The Trenches: Part II," and finally ended with Chicago P.D.'s “In The Trenches: Part III.”
Burgess and Ruzek should specifically invite Kidd and Severide, especially after the 2025 One Chicago crossover. Specific details about the said affair remain under wrap, although it's likely going to happen in the Chicago PD season 12 finale. Their wedding will likely be a large friends-and-family event. A cameo from Kidd and Severide can make the moment extra special while also being a reminder of this year's crossover.
How Severide & Kidd's Cameo In Chicago PD Benefits One Chicago
Crossovers Are Exciting Events
Severide and Kidd's cameos in "In the Trenches: Part III" were a welcome surprise in the latest One Chicago crossover. Both Severide and Kidd are major characters in Chicago Fire, but it was nice to see them in action in Chicago P.D.'s share of the crossover event. It not only highlighted their skills as first responders but also showcased how vital they are to One Chicago's storytelling. Their appearances in Chicago P.D.'s episode also helped show just how close all the One Chicago shows are and how well the characters work together.

Why 2025's One Chicago Crossover Starts With Fire Instead of Med
NBC has a very important reason for changing the schedule and starting the One Chicago crossover with Chicago Fire instead of Chicago Med.
Having Severide and Kidd appear in Chicago P.D. also helps to continue the precedent of having small cameos outside of characters' respective One Chicago shows. Crossovers raise excitement for franchises and encourage detailed storytelling as characters from different career paths interact with each other and realize they share more similarities than expected. That being said, NBC and Wolf Entertainment don't have to wait years to stage any kind of interaction among the franchise's characters. The 2025 One Chicago crossover event was huge, but smaller crossovers are also exciting.
