The The Walking Dead kept the undead alive in the years that followed.

Danny Boyle's 28 Months Later, there's little sign of it moving ahead.

One of the major characters in 28 Days Later is Selena (Naomie Harris, Skyfall), who saves Jim's life after his first run-in with the infected. She's quite cold throughout the first act and is willing to kill or abandon other survivors without a second thought if her own survival is threatened. She eventually warms to her makeshift new family and after they survive a nightmarish stay with rogue soldiers, the movie ends with them about to be rescued from the quarantined UK. Unfortunately, the 28 Days Later comics prove they didn't have a happy ending.

This BOOM! studios comic series debuted in 2009 and picks up with Selena living in a refugee camp in Norway. The 28 Days Later comic reveal Jim is set to be executed for murdering the men of Major Henry West from the end of the film, and Hannah was placed in foster care. On her own again, a withdrawn Selena is approached by a reporter to be the guide for him and his crew as they sneak into London. She reluctantly agrees and sets off on another gory journey.

The 28 Days Later comic is a surprisingly engrossing continuation of the movie and is able to flesh out the world even more. The comic also manages to maintain Selena's voice, who is less of a one-note action heroine than a woman badly scarred by her experiences but having the strength to keep pressing ahead. The story even gives her a happy ending of sorts, which after the events of both the movie and comic, is very well-earned. If 28 Months Later ever happens, maybe she'll make a big-screen return too.
