Cillian Murphy expressed interest in the making of a third another installment, titled 28 Months Later, would happen.
For quite some time a third entry in the series has been discussed and rumored. However, no plans for producing this sequel have ever come to fruition. Garland over the years has stated that he has great ideas for a sequel, and was interested in making his story come to light at various points. More recently, 28 Months Later got a promidate from Boyle, as the director believes now is a good time to hopefully get the project off the grounds. As discussions surrounding the film continue, Murphy offers his thoughts
Murphy, star of 28 Days Later, has expressed in an interview with NME his interest in making the third sequel, 28 Months Later. Recently he was interviewed for the 20-year anniversary of the film and was able to give good news regarding a sequel. Murphy stated that whenever he runs into Garland or Boyle, he mentions making the film. He stated that he watched the film recently with his children, and he noticed that the film still holds up, which is impressive for a twenty-year-old film. Because of this, he says, the idea of a sequel is appealing to him.
"Every time I do bump into Danny or Alex I always mention it. Because I showed it to my kids recently, some Halloween about four or five years ago, and they loved it. It really stands up, which is amazing for a film that’s 20 years old. So yeah, I love the idea, and it’s very appealing to me.”
What A 28 Days Later Sequel Could Be About
In the same interview, Boyle stated that he is very tempted to direct the sequel titled 28 Months Later. He explained that Garland has already written a script for the film years ago, and that it is currently a good time to get the project in the works. Boyle emphasized that the script takes place in England again and that it is very much about England. Boyle stated that the film would be a good idea as it would bring people into the cinema, referencing how increasingly difficult it is for movie distributors and studios to draw moviegoers into the cinema unless it is something like a Marvel film. However, a third 28 Days Later film, as long as it is decent, would draw crowds to the cinema, Boyle assured.
28 Months Later, if in the works, would be a nice reunion of the original makers of the franchise. Starring Murphy and directed by Boyle, the movie would take place nearly two and a half years after the original 28 Days Later movie in England. It would follow the original protagonist, Jim, long after the initial outbreak of the Rage virus. Due to the success and notoriety of the first film, it can only be imagined that the idea and production for this film will be a lot more grandiose and highly refined. Due to the futuristic setting of this film, it allows Boyle and Garland to experiment and toy with how England and society adapt and try to survive deep into the apocalypse. Even though the film has not been received the green light or started production, there is much good news for audiences and fans that hint that a sequel could be in the works soon.
