Carlos Is Ready To Be A Father In 9-1-1: Lone Star's Final Episodes
"He is capable of being a much bigger person than just this obsession that has defined him for this last year."
ScreenRant: Carlos discovers that Chief Bridges killed his father. Did you want that betrayal to hit Carlos harder than if it actually was Ranger Campbell?
Rashad Raisani: We knew that the betrayal had to hit as close to home as possible because the person Carlos trusted the most would be the only person who could have kept it from him this long. And frankly, we also wanted somebody of Alan Autry's gravitas. He was the only person capable of pulling the wool over Gabriel's eyes also. So that was part of why I really wanted it to be the person who could hurt Carlos the most to be the one who did it, because he was the only one who could stay in front of these two brilliant minds, being Carlos and Gabriel, the way that he did.
And I also was hoping that the audience, because of Parker Young, and I love Parker, but he has this sort of rakish, quasi-cocky manner about him that the audience would go, "Okay, you know what? I can kind of see this cocky guy might do this." But at the end of the day, one thing I know about Parker as well is that he has this deep goodness about him. And I think at the end of this episode, you see when he's in the hospital, and I think his performance is brilliant, but he's almost crying because he's still mourning their chief who betrayed him. The main point is the person that Carlos and Gabriel trusted the most in the world was the only one who could have been capable of deceiving them at the level that he did.
Carlos is going to tell TK he's ready to be a father. He didn't want kids even before his father was killed, so what changed his mind?
Rashad Raisani: Carlos has been in this prison of bondage. He has seen TK's efforts to try and get him out of it this whole season. In Episode 5, we really played it a lot when Carlos gave TK an empty box and said, "I'm going to put my obsessions in here." So Carlos has known that he's being held back, but he just had to solve it. And so I think for him, when he finally solves it, it's a release for him that he can now be a human being again.
But I think, also, what Carlos realizes in that speech to his father at the grave is his father was so much bigger of a person than just being a Texas Ranger. And I think in saying that, Carlos is also realizing that he is capable of being a much bigger person than just this obsession that has defined him for this last year, and that's the big pivot point for Carlos' character. That he's going to stop thinking with this narrow focus and start to be a fully-fledged human being who can be a much more present, not just Texas Ranger, and not just husband, but also now a father. And you'll see some beautiful performances down the stream from him on that front.
So does that mean we might get a glimpse of TK and Carlos as parents before the show ends?
Rashad Raisani: We will. It's truly wonderful watching them together.
Judd Is Owen's Priority When 9-1-1: Lone Star Season 5 Returns
"When Owen sees that Judd is in crisis, all bets are off with everything else."
Judd has shown nothing but pride about Grace's decision to Mercy Ships, but we find out that he's turned to alcohol to cope. What is his path forward going to look like now that Owen is offering his ?
Rashad Raisani: In Episode 10, Jim Parrack gives, I think, the most haunting performance of the series. He's just incredible. It's not so cut and dry. At the end of the episode of Episode 9, he's saying, "Okay, I'm good. I it it." That's it, right? Just itting the problem. He still has a lot of work to do.
And if you recall, when Judd met Grace, he was at the lowest point in his life. He actually met her because he was calling what was, in essence, a suicide hotline. It was a faith crisis line. And so when he met Grace, he was swimming in rage, in substance abuse, and was right on the edge of suicide. He's going to have to go to the darkest places before he can emerge. And so he's going to do that in these last couple of episodes.
Has Judd been hiding any resentment towards Grace? Or is he truly just feeling a loss of purpose?
Rashad Raisani: I think that Judd doesn't like the feelings that he has inside and doesn't want to acknowledge them, and that's part of the problem, to answer your question. Or maybe to not answer your question. But that's all in the soup of what's going on with Judd. He has these feelings, these frustrations, and as you said, these resentments, that he doesn't want to say out loud. But if he wants to heal, he's going to have to say them out loud and be honest about what's going on inside of him.
Owen decided not to take the job in New York. Is that officially off the table or could that be further explored before the show ends?
Rashad Raisani: To some extent, you'll just have to wait and see. But on the other, in Owen's mind, he only came to Texas because his son was in crisis and this firehouse, the 126, was in crisis because all these firefighters had just died tragically in this explosion. And as Owen looks around, at the beginning, for the first half of Episode 9, what he's having to come to grips with is, "Look, nobody else is in crisis here. TK is thriving. My firehouse is thriving."
And he sees that there is some suffering happening in New York. His old guys whose kids are now in a bit of a crisis moment with some of the malaise that's hit the New York Fire Department. But when Owen sees that Judd is in crisis, all bets are off with everything else. That is the clear and present danger for him, and he's not thinking about New York. He gives it up. I mean, when he says no, he's saying no. And so he's here for Judd.
Raisani Praises Gina Torres' Performance In 9-1-1: Lone Star Season 5
"What we'll see from Gina Torres in these back few episodes is, again, one of the great performances of any show I've ever worked on."
Tommy is battling cancer. What can you share about her storyline going into the last few episodes and how it affects her family and continues to affect the team?
Rashad Raisani: It affects everybody, and I think you see in Episode 8, when the team rallies to get her cancer treatment paid for, which was a storyline that Stand Up to Cancer had helped us [with]. You have this terrible life event happen where you end up with cancer and then, to make it worse, your insurance providers won't cover it, or you can't get an appointment with your oncologist. All these logistics that just add to the suffering.
So we really wanted to play that. And what we'll see from Gina Torres in these back few episodes is, again, one of the great performances of any show I've ever worked on. She also has a tough road in front of her, which we'll go to the end. We will see some family from her past that she'll have some beautiful scenes with that maybe people will be surprised by.
We know Grace isn't in the final season, but would you say that the series finale offers some type of satisfaction for fans who have really been invested in Grace and Judd's relationship?
Rashad Raisani: Yeah. I said at the beginning of the season that I can't tell fans what to think, but I think what they will feel like at the end is that the love for Grace, and that Judd has for Grace, and that the show has for Grace and the reverence—it's a love letter to the end. Put it that way.
