Warning: SPOILERS ahead for 9-1-1: Lone Star season 5, episode 1!9-1-1: Lone Star season 5, it was confirmed Grace had left the team and her family to volunteer at Mercy Ships, a real-life non-profit focused on sending medical aid to those in need, particularly children. This results in a more isolated season for Judd, who recently quit his job to take care of his son, Wyatt (Jackson Pace) following an injury that paralyzed him last season.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Raisani explained how having Grace leave 9-1-1: Lone Star to volunteer at Mercy Ships made Judd's frustration more complex, as he understands his wife is doing something for the good of the world. The showrunner also explained how he would be sacrificing for Wyatt, helping him by making his home ADA compliant after the accident that paralyzed him. He also says changes to the former firefighter's life will be permanent alterations he'll have to live with. Check out what Raisani had to say below:
The only thing that I think could get Grace away from her family was this higher calling, which has been a part of her character from day one. I just thought that that was the best way to protect her character and also to honor her character. I also thought that might be an interesting place to put Judd as well, where he's being...not abandoned, but he's been left by his wife for God — or for this incredible purpose. That puts him in a very complex position where he feels frustrated, he feels alone, but he's not angry. Or at least he's not itting on a conscious level that he's angry. We get to that a little bit later.
There's a quote that I heard that said, 'The sacrifice is what gives something meaning.' And so to me, Judd's sacrifice for Wyatt had to cost something. He couldn't just go back to work right away. Hopefully, as the season goes on, you will feel like we did something that feels both, hopefully, unexpected, but yet it's the perfect thing to happen. I guess I'd tease that Judd's sacrifice for his son will play out the rest of the season. You know what I mean? I don't want to spoil it, but it doesn't ever get to go back to how it was. Things are different, and they will remain that way.
What Raisani's Explanation Means For Judd's Story In 9-1-1: Lone Star Season 5
Judd Will Face His Biggest Challenges In The Final Season
While the 9-1-1: Lone Star season 4 finale resulted in him quitting his job to take care of Wyatt, Judd's life without Grace is likely to put him in a more isolating position than ever before. While life is improving for his son, who has since taken a job as a 9-1-1 dispatcher like his stepmother, the former team member has many knots in his life to untangle before he can settle on a new normalcy. This includes taking care of his two-year-old daughter by himself, making it tough for him to interact with anyone outside his children.

Why Grace's 911 Lone Star Exit Is So Disappointing (& How The Finale Can Fix It)
Sierra McClain exited 9-1-1: Lone Star ahead of the season 5 premiere, and the TV show's explanation for Grace's departure is frustrating.
Raisani's statements hint at a deeper exploration of Judd's mindset as the series continues, potentially telling other characters about his frustrations despite knowing Grace is happy with her volunteer work. Since he's bound to speak to the cast of 9-1-1: Lone Star on a regular basis despite no longer being on the team, their friendship could help make him feel less isolated. However, with limitations now set on his life because of his new responsibilities, it will take some time before he accepts his role of providing for his children in a new form.

The Firefighter's Biggest Challenges Are Ahead
Even though Judd is clearly happy his wife is pursuing something she loves, Grace's absence is going to be his biggest challenge as 9-1-1: Lone Star season 5 continues. However, even though he'll face doubtless hardship in the final episodes, he may also learn valuable lessons about taking care of his family in his new role.
