Angela Bassett's Athena Grant being the only Ryan Murphy TV shows shared the screen, but it likely will not be the last after Athena's experience on The Odyssey. The crossover happened after Doctor Odyssey began moving into a more exciting genre, so the character overlap could not have come at a better time.
While the crossover is missing certain luxurious Doctor Odyssey cruise ship. Both 9-1-1 and Doctor Odyssey are known to feature intense, harrowing drama, which is why the positive tone in their crossover event is immensely refreshing for the characters. As a result, even though Athena was the only 9-1-1 character that appeared, the crossover was amazing regardless.
Athena's Doctor Odyssey Crossover Role Explained
Athena Received A Warm Welcome
After the horrifying cruise ship incident in 9-1-1 season 7, Athena was in no rush to be on a ship again any time soon. However, her job required it. While apprehending a suspect who was planning to rob The Odyssey during their themed casino week, Angela's team realizes that their suspect's luggage is still on board. Seeing as it might contain evidence for their case, Angela goes to retrieve it. However, just as she is leaving, she goes to help someone in distress and accidentally gets locked in a closet with no phone signal and no one around to hear them.

Ranking Doctor Odyssey's Best Cruise Weeks Based On Ridiculousness
Doctor Odyssey has been known for featuring exciting and unique weekly themes for each cruise but some are more ridiculous than others.
The Odyssey's crew only discovers Athena and the cleaner she is trapped with hours after the ship has left its port. When Athena panics, the crew does everything they can to calm her nerves and prove that cruise ships can be fun. Athena's time on The Odyssey turns out to be beneficial anyway, as the FBI calls her and tells her there are still two heist suspects on board. She then teams up with Doctor Odyssey's Max Bankman (Joshua Jackson) to find the duo and stop them before they can escape.
The 9-1-1/Doctor Odyssey Crossover Couldn't Have Been As Fun For Athena If The 118 Was There
The Crossover Gave Athena A Chance To Relax
Thus, the 9-1-1 and Doctor Odyssey crossover gave Athena a chance to have fun on a cruise ship, something that seemed impossible after her experience on one just last year. It was especially nice to see her relax with Avery (Phillipa Soon) and a cruise ship guest and not have to worry about working for a while. The crossover shows off Athena's excellent investigation skills, but it also her letting loose despite her new and extremely valid phobia of ships.
Seeing the 118 in the crossover would have been fun too, but it would have taken the focus off Athena in order to give every character some screen time. The episode would have been divided between police, fire, and medical services, and it might have felt crowded. Seeing as this was the first time Athena felt remotely comfortable boarding a ship after her experiences in 9-1-1, it would not have been right to have her initial stress downplayed because of limited screen time.
The crossover showed off Athena's excellent investigation skills, but it also showed her letting loose despite her new and extremely valid phobia of ships.
Besides, if the 118 was on board too, Athena would never have had the chance to work as closely as she did with The Odyssey's crew, which was the real treat of the crossover. Her heartfelt conversation regarding Avery's pregnancy would also not have had the same impact if the writers had been busy switching between the different 118 characters. Having just Athena appear in the crossover allowed her to breathe while also building strong relationships with Doctor Odyssey's characters.
How Can Athena Re-Team With The Doctor Odyssey Crew
Athena Would Be Welcomed Back
Athena had such a nice time working with Doctor Odyssey's team, that she would be welcomed back by The Odyssey's crew. Captain Massey (Don Johnson) is especially vocal in wanting to see her return under better circumstances. As a result, Athena could easily reunite with the Doctor Odyssey crew by booking a vacation with her team during one of The Odyssey's many exciting theme weeks. It would be pricey, but Athena could definitely negotiate a family and friends discount. She and her family would be more than welcome on the ship.
9-1-1 airs on Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
More realistically, Athena could also reunite with the team if an incident occurs near the Los Angeles port that requires fire, police, and medical services. Since Athena and The Odyssey's crew work so well together, they would be more than happy to do so again and help those around them. Another 9-1-1 and Doctor Odyssey crossover will probably not happen soon, but I know I am just waiting to see the characters interact once more.
