Spoiler alert: The following article contains spoilers from the 9-1-1: Lone Star series finale.

9-1-1: Lone Star comes to an end with season 5. However, its finale leaves the door open for producers to explore other opportunities with some characters.

Ryan Murphy and Tim Minear are developing a new 9-1-1 spinoff for ABC. It will reportedly be released during the 2025–2026 TV season (if the network greenlights it), but the show's location and cast are unknown, as of the writing of this article.

During 9-1-1: Lone Star season 5, episode 12, Station 126 fights to save millions of lives after an asteroid hits the city, triggering a possible nuclear meltdown. They rush to the university that houses the reactor, where Owen almost dies but still finds the shutoff valve. Five months later, Owen is back in New York; Judd is Station 126's new captain; TK and Carlos have adopted Jonah; Tommy's cancer is in remission; Marjan is pregnant; Mateo gets U.S. citizenship; and more. Almost every character arc comes full circle, but that doesn't mean their stories have to end with 9-1-1: Lone Star.

4 Owen's New Adventures Back In New York City

Rob Lowe's Character Accepted A New Job During 9-1-1: Lone Star's Ending

One of the most obvious possible 9-1-1: Lone Star spinoffs would center around Owen. At the end of the procedural drama, Rob Lowe's character moves back to New York City, where he accepts a job as the New York Fire Department's chief. His new role is ittedly a big step up from being the captain of the 126. So, taking the position is a no-brainer for Owen (even though it's heartbreaking to see him leave his family behind in Austin, Texas). According to showrunner Rashad Raisani (via TheWrap), Owen ends up in New York partly because of a potential spinoff. Raisani explained:

"When I was pitching it to Rob, I just said, 'Look the beautiful thing about that is, one, it's completely true to who he is. Two, it's the biggest job there is in firefighting in America. And three, if there's ever a spinoff in New York, they have to go through you, my friend.' He's like, 'Let's do it.' He was loving the idea of New York. Certainly, if something goes through New York, it wouldn't be the worst thing to have Captain Strand up there."

The flash forward during 9-1-1: Lone Star's ending features a brief look into Owen's new job. TK video chats with his father, who is quickly called to an emergency. The last shot of 9-1-1: Lone Star shows Owen walking out the doors into the bustling streets of New York as the procedural drama comes full circle. The Fox show begins with Owen moving from New York to Austin and ends with his return to the Big Apple. Still, given the different setting and Owen's new start, his story could easily continue via a spinoff following his adventures in New York.

3 A Jax Spinoff

Miles McKenna's Character Was Introduced In 9-1-1: Lone Star's Penultimate Episode

9-1-1: Lone Star season 5, episode 11, "Impact," introduces Miles McKenna's Jax, a non-binary teenager Paul takes under his wing. Paul meets Jax when they get their arm stuck in a gate while doing a dare. Jax, who often gets bullied about their identity, later explains to Paul that they perform reckless stunts on social media to get people to notice them. Paul, a transgender man, has a heart-to-heart with Jax, which resonates with them. Jax later s Station 126 during the asteroid crisis because they want to help. So, a 9-1-1: Lone Star spinoff revolving around Jax makes sense.

Of course, a Jax spinoff would look quite different from a typical 9-1-1 TV show. Instead, it could be a coming-of-age story focusing on Jax's journey as a young, non-binary person who wants to become a first responder. Jax is still a kid, so, they wouldn't jump headfirst into the fire. However, the potential spinoff could explore the growth and development Jax undergoes after his encounter with Paul (who would hopefully be a part of the cast as Jax's mentor).

2 Grace's Stories From Mercy Ships

Grace Was Absent In Season 5

Many have conflicting feelings about the 9-1-1 spinoff's last season. However, most agree that Grace's ending is unsatisfactory because of Sierra McClain's exit from 9-1-1: Lone Star ahead of season 5's premiere. The good news is that the series didn't kill off Grace or force a divorce between her and Judd. The bad news is that the reasoning behind Grace's exit didn't make much sense. Nevertheless, the writers could make up for Grace's frustrating ending by creating a spinoff centering around her time in Mercy Ships.

Sierra McClain’s Grace has been absent in 9-1-1: Lone Star season 5, but her character is still an important part of Judd’s final story.

The 9-1-1: Lone Star season 5 premiere explains that Grace ed Mercy Ships, an international faith-based organization that provides life-saving care and surgery to those in need. As a result, she can't be seen throughout season 5's 12 episodes. A spinoff focusing on Grace's time abroad would give the audience insight into her whereabouts during 9-1-1: Lone Star season 5 and why she decided to volunteer with Mercy Ships (from her perspective).

1 Wyatt's New Career Path As A 9-1-1 Dispatcher

Judd's Son Took On A New Job In Season 5

Grace will (hopefully) eventually return to Austin, Texas, and her job as a 9-1-1 operator. When she does, perhaps Wyatt (who takes over from Grace after she leaves) will move on from the call center, possibly going somewhere else to continue his new career path. Wyatt wanted to be a firefighter before his accident. Now, though, he has found a new calling as an emergency dispatcher. Consequently, Wyatt is one of the few characters who could lead an interesting, new 9-1-1: Lone Star spinoff, given how open his opportunities are and how much he still has to learn about himself.
