  • While Fox didn't renew the flagship series 9-1-1, the franchise continued on ABC for season 7, and has been confirmed for season 8.

Rob Lowe addresses recent rumors that 9-1-1: Lone Star season 5 will soon return on Monday, September 23, and will air episodes weekly from there.

Speaking with Variety, Lowe speaks on whether 9-1-1: Lone Star will end after season 5. According to the actor, he and the team "went into it pretty much knowing that it was going to be the last season." That mindset "affected everything [they] did." As a result, Lowe feels like it is "probably the end of an era." Even so, Lowe asserted that he wanted to "show everybody what is still possible in network television" with the run of Lone Star, and he is proud of this accomplishment. Check out the full quote from Lowe below:

We all went into it pretty much knowing that it was going to be the last season, so that affected everything we did. We wanted to really show everybody what is still possible in network television if people have the appetite to do it. It feels like it’s probably the end of an era of a certain type — well, it doesn’t feel like it. It is the end of an era of a certain type of show we once had an opportunity to make, and I think they’re great.

Unpacking 9-1-1 Lone Star's Renewal Chances

Cast Have Been Pessimistic About The Future

While Lowe does not seem hopeful about the chances of 9-1-1: Lone Star season 6, he is not alone in expressing this sentiment. In the last few months, cast have repeatedly made social media posts implying that 9-1-1: Lone Star season 5 will be the show's last season, offering cryptic goodbyes. While the cast ' pessimism is not an absolute harbinger of death for Lone Star, it is not promising, considering Fox has still not confirmed the series' renewal for season 6.

9-1-1: Lone Star season 5 is shaping up to be a disaster before a single episode of the successful 9-1-1 spinoff's new season even airs.

Another bad sign for 9-1-1: Lone Star is that Fox cancelled the flagship series, 9-1-1, after season 6. This did not equate to the death of 9-1-1, as the series was picked up by ABC for season 7. However, there was reason to believe that Fox sided against keeping 9-1-1 due to budget cuts. More Fox shows could be on the chopping block in the coming months, including 9-1-1: Lone Star.

Luckily for viewers of the 9-1-1 universe, a cancellation of 9-1-1: Lone Star would not mean an end to the franchise as a whole. 9-1-1 season 8 has already been confirmed on ABC, and a release date has been announced for Thursday, September 26. Even if 9-1-1: Lone Star is cancelled, 9-1-1's healthy run on ABC bodes well for the future of the series beyond season 8, satiating viewers of the procedural series.
