9-1-1 season 8 broke viewer's hearts with the shocking and devastating death of series star and 118 captain, Bobby Nash. Bobby died after exposure to a deadly pathogen, when he used the last of the antidote to save his teammate Chimney. This has left a hole in the 118 team now that will need to be filled quickly, and the appointment of a new captain is sure to spell drama for several prominent characters.
During an interview with ScreenRant, Stark talked about how time will no doubt help to heal the wound of Bobby's death, but, for Buck, there are going to be issues moving forward. He discussed how Buck might struggle to accept a new captain at the 118, especially so soon after Bobby's untimely death, and that there is going to be an adjustment period. Read Stark's comments on Buck's future below:
ScreenRant: What do you imagine Buck's future will look like at the 118? Can he accept a new captain [after Bobby's death]?
Oliver Stark: He'll have to eventually, but I think there's going to be a lot of difficulty involved with that. I think the whole dynamic of the 118 is up in the air at the moment. Time heals all. But I do think it's going to take a little period, and I think it will depend on who that captain is. If it's internal, I'm sure it'll be an easier adjustment for Buck. If it's external, I predict some issues moving forward.
What This Means For Buck's 9-1-1 Future
Expect A Lost, Angry, Broken Buck Who Will Take Time To Move On
The impact of 9-1-1's first major character death will be felt by Buck in particular. He's not just lost a colleague, but a friend, mentor, and, most importantly, a father figure. Bobby's bond with Buck fulfilled both men in different ways. Bobby provided the kind of guidance that Buck never got from his own father, while Buck allows Bobby to fulfill a fatherly role after losing his own kids years prior. As Stark's comments suggest, Buck is going to find it very difficult to deal with the loss of someone who played such a prominent role in his life.
There are a lot of issues that are bound to arise, and friction with a new captain feels like pretty much a given at this point.
Of course, over time, Buck may well grow used to the idea of having a new captain, but right now, things are going to be too raw. Bobby's spirit will loom large over Station 118, and his replacement will have big shoes to fill, and might find it difficult to command the respect of those around them. As Stark says, if the new captain is an internal appointment, the adjustment should be easier for Buck. But, if it is an external choice, there is bound to be some friction, as there was between 9-1-1: Lone Star's Judd and Owen.

Buck has gone through one of the most life-changing experiences that a character can face, and he is going to be at a crossroads in his life. The loss of Bobby is something that will take him a very long time to get past, and he may never fully recover from this event. There are a lot of issues that are bound to arise, and friction with a new captain feels like pretty much a given at this point. However, Buck might be able to develop a professional respect for Bobby's replacement over time, and this is something 9-1-1 season 9 will look to explore.
