The 1964 film A Fistful of Dollars is getting a remake decades later. The film follows this anonymous gunslinger as he pits two feuding small-town families against each other in an area that has been sharply divided by conflict. In addition to Eastwood, the film's leading cast features Gian Maria Volonte, Marianne Koch, Wolfgang Lukschy, and Sieghardt Rupp.

As per Deadline, a remake of A Fistful of Dollars is now in development. The the movie will be produced by the Euro Gang Entertainment, Italian producer Enzo Sisti from FPC, and the Rome-based company Jolly Film. The remake is early enough into its production process that the plot and casting details are yet under wraps. Sisti spoke about his initial thoughts on the film, as did Euro Gang Entertainment co-founders Gianni Nunnari and Simon Horsman. Check out their full quote below:

Sisti: I am delighted to partner with Gianni again having just worked with him on Those About to Die, and with Simon on the remake of this classic film, which created a whole new sub-genre in film spawning over 500 European westerns.

Nunnari and Horsman: Enzo is one of the most experienced producers in the film business, and we are fortunate to call him our partner on this incredible project. We are determined to produce a remake that does justice to the great Sergio Leone’s classic.

Now Is The Right Time For A Fistful Of Dollars Remake (But It's Still Risky)

A Fistful Of Dollars Is Part Of The Spaghetti Western Tradition

A Fistful of Dollars was successful enough to spawn a trilogy, as it was followed up by For a Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. All three of these films starred Eastwood, with the trilogy marking a hugely iconic moment in the actor's career. All three films, but especially A Fistful of Dollars and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly are iconic films, making any attempt to remake A Fistful of Dollars a tough task.

A Fistful of Dollars is also hard to remake now because of the shifts in the cultural zeitgeist between then and now. A Fistful of Dollars was part of a unique 1960s trend of the "spaghetti Western" genre. Spaghetti Westerns were films made by European directors, usually shot in Italy, that mimicked and often subverted tropes of the Hollywood Western. Leone is considered the grandfather of the spaghetti Western, and the Fistful of Dollars trilogy is the cornerstone of the mid-'60s genre.

Clint Eastwood was famous for popularizing the Spaghetti Western, but some of the best movies in the genre didn't feature his Man With No Name.

The remake will benefit from the American Western making a resurgence in recent years. This pattern has been witnessed through series like Yellowstone, Lawmen: Bass Reeves, and films like Kevin Costner's Horizon movies. A Fistful of Dollar's could bring in new audiences and may be on par with successful Western remakes like True Grit and 3:10 To Yuma.
