In an unusual move for the Game of Thrones franchise, the planned Game of Thrones spinoffs, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is slated for release on HBO and Max sometime in 2025, though no firm date, nor even a month, has been confirmed. Based on George R.R. Martin's The Tales of Dunk and Egg books, this will be a very different kind of prequel compared to House of the Dragon.

Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. Though filming wrapped on season 1 back in September, not a lot has been shown of the series, beyond its inclusion in a couple of "coming to Max" trailers, which amount to only a few seconds of footage. There's not yet been an official teaser trailer, and that is quite surprising.

A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms' Trailer Should've Released By Now

Game Of Thrones & House Of The Dragon Suggest As Much

Predicting the release of TV trailers is typically a lot harder than doing so for movies, since they're often a bit more random and less tied to major tentpole releases like their big screen counterparts. Still, there is some reasonable logic for looking at when the first A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms trailer should be released.

7 Ways A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms Will Be Very Different To Both Game Of Thrones & House Of The Dragon

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is the next Game of Thrones prequel, and it should be significantly different from the first two Westeros shows.

House of the Dragon season 1 had an official teaser trailer in October 2021, ahead of the season dropping in June 2022. The first season 2 teaser trailer was released in December 2023, with the season itself beginning in August 2024. Game of Thrones itself was a bit more varied, but did often release teasers of some kind around November/December (this happened with seasons 6-8), although these were sometimes a little more conceptual rather than containing actual footage, but nonetheless served to build a lot of hype.

What's interesting in the case of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is that a trailer reportedly was shown to some journalists and insiders at an event back in November, as per Jeff Conway on X.

Filming on the show started back in June, and wrapped four months later. That means there's been plenty of time to edit together a teaser trailer, so it makes sense one was ready to be shown in November (in contrast, House of the Dragon season 1 was still filming when the first teaser dropped, albeit that production was different due to Covid restrictions). Nonetheless, it makes it a bit more surprising that the new spinoff's teaser hasn't been released yet.

That isn't inherently a problem, given the size of the franchise, but good teasers would be a major boost for it. After all, House of the Dragon season 2 was more divisive than season 1, and this is a smaller show (with no dragons), which could mean slightly lower interest. A great teaser, whenever it arrives, will help that.

A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms' Trailer Not Releasing Yet Fits Later Release Window Reports

The next Game of Thrones prequel doesn't yet have an air date from HBO, and there are actually conflicting, confusing reports on when A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will release. Warner Bros. Discovery's global streaming chief JB Perrette teased that it would arrive in Summer 2025, which would be in keeping with House of the Dragon's schedule. However, Variety also reported that it would more likely be late-2025, which also fits with comments from WBD's CEO David Zaslav from an earnings call back in February 2024.

If A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms isn't releasing until late-2025, then starting the marketing campaign later would make sense.

If A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms isn't releasing until late-2025, then starting the marketing campaign later would make sense. Still, that is also somewhat surprising, given the Summer window proved so popular for House of the Dragon, and filming being wrapped means post-production timelines shouldn't be an issue. Nonetheless, if it means taking more time to get things right, then that can only be a good thing, and will further make this a unique Game of Thrones spinoff.
