Despite being one of my most rewatched movies from the '90s, I just discovered the truth about Geena Davis' role at the end of A League of Their Own. As a '90s kid who always loved sports and movies, a mashup of the two has always been on my radar. Therefore, it should be no surprise that I've always been a fan of Penny Marshall's A League of Their Own. In fact, the movie had me constantly questioning why I was forced to play softball instead of baseball growing up.
To this day, I still consider A League of Their Own one of the best sports movies ever made. The cast, consisting of names like Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, and Lori Petty, remains a highlight, but the true story that inspired A League of Their Own is awe-inspiring. It's a shame the reboot TV series centered on another iteration of the Rockford Peaches didn't continue on Amazon, considering how the story is still relevant in the modern-day. Speaking of the modern-day, I'm embarrassed to it it took me over two decades to learn a fact about the movie.

Why Amazon Canceled A League Of Their Own (Despite The Season 2 Renewal)
A League of Their Own was previously greenlit for a shortened season 2, but Amazon has just canceled the series altogether due to industry changes.
Lynn Cartwright Plays Older Dottie In A League Of Their Own's Ending, Not Geena Davis
Lynn Cartwright Was The Perfect Choice For Present-Day Dottie
Throughout my various A League of Their Own rewatches, I've come to memorize much of the movie, including the movie's most iconic quotes. However, I never noticed that Geena Davis didn't portray Dottie Hinson at the end of A League of Their Own; actress Lynn Cartwright played the older version of the character. When the movie flips to present-day 1991 to document many of the AAGPBL alums reuniting for an event at the Hall of Fame event in Cooperstown, I always assumed it was Davis made up to look like an aged Dottie.
Lynn Cartwright began acting in 1957, but A League of Their Own was her final role before she ed away in 2004 at the age of 75.
How A League Of Their Own Tricked Viewers With Lynn Cartwright's Version Of Dottie
Geena Davis Was Somewhat Present As Older Dottie
Here I am, years later, realizing that I was fooled by movie magic within A League of Their Own's cast, considering Davis never directly appeared at the end of the movie. While I may have been too busy trying to get the Rockford Peaches' team song out of my head, I always just assumed Davis was used as the sole actress in the Cooperstown sequence as a way to connect the two eras depicted in the movie. I'm sure I can't be the only one who thought it was still Davis playing older Dottie, but hey, the movie was very convincing.
Not only did Lynn Cartwright, who would've been in her 60s at the time, resemble what I'd expect an aged-up Davis to look like, but she also sounded directly like Dottie. Apparently, the movie took an extra step in further connecting the different versions of Dottie. Davis' voice was dubbed over Cartwright's for A League of Their Own's Cooperstown ending so that Dottie's voice remained the same decades later. Since Davis was still involved in that finale sequence, I guess I was technically only wrong about one major aspect.
