After initially being renewed for a short final season, Prime Video has cancelled A League of Their Own season 2. The dramedy show acted as an adaptation of the beloved movie of the same name, chronicling the forming of the Rockford Peaches in the now-defunct All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, primarily focusing on a woman who s the team to fulfill her dream of playing professional baseball, and an African-American woman looking to overcome racial and societal issues in the '40s to similarly fulfill her dream. Abbi Jacobson and Chanté Adams led the show's star-studded cast alongside D'Arcy Carden, Roberta Colindrez, and Gbemisola Ikumelo, among others.
Deadline has brought word that A League of Their Own season 2 has been cancelled by Prime Video after initially being renewed this past March. Sources report that the cancellation stems from the ongoing Writer's Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes, which could lead to further shows finding their renewals reversed should work stoppages continue after Labor Day. The show's initial renewal came after a very ionate campaign from those who fell in love with the show, with the plan for a shortened final season. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony Pictures Television is also reportedly shopping season 2 around to other streamers.
Could A League of Their Own's Fans Save Season 2?
The news of A League of Their Own's season 2 cancellation is sure to come as a disappointment for the fans whose successful campaign netted the renewal in the first place. The renewal already came with a slight caveat that season 2 would not only feature half the episodes of season 1, but would also act as the finale for the period dramedy. Considering the expenses that go into such a production and large cast, it is understandable to a degree why Prime Video couldn't keep everyone's contracts going amid the dual strikes.
Despite the cancellation, it will be interesting to see if those who campaigned for the show's renewal in the first place further speak out for A League of Their Own season 2 to be revived whenever the WGA and SAG-AFTRA get fair offers from the AMPTP and bring their strikes to a close. Prime Video recently saw another costly period effort show, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, close out its run with its acclaimed season 5, which leaves the door open in their budgeting for a similarly budgeted project.
Additionally, with such Warrior Nun proving successful in their efforts, another push from those that campaigned for A League of Their Own season 2 could be fruitful in bringing the show back. Leading up to the renewal, sources had indicated many at Prime Video were keen to keep the show going, resulting in its shortened final season order, and the creators' ability to bring the show to a close with only four episodes could even create the possibility for them to pitch a movie-length finale at some point in the future.
