ABC renewed 9 scripted shows ahead of their announcement for their Fall 2023 TV schedule. While some shows like The Rookie: Feds and Home Economics remain in limbo, ABC has confirmed new seasons of shows like The Conners and Grey's Anatomy can be expected in the future.

Now, Variety reports ABC won't be airing any scripted programming in Fall 2023, instead focusing on unscripted shows. The only exception to this is Abbott Elementary, which will be airing reruns on Wednesday night. ABC's Fall schedule includes returning unscripted shows, as well as new series The Golden Bachelor.

Why ABC Is Focusing On Unscripted Shows In Fall 2023

Jake Pavelka proposes to Vienna on The Bachelor season 10

ABC's decision to focus on unscripted shows for Fall 2023 is in response to the writers strike, which has disrupted many TV and movie productions since it began. The strike means popular dramas like The Good Doctor season 7 and successful sitcoms like The Conners season 6 can't go into production, as new episodes haven't been written yet. By focusing on unscripted programs, ABC can continue producing new content despite the writers strike.

While ABC produces more unscripted programming in Fall 2023, it doesn't put confirmed series renewals in jeopardy. So far, ABC has confirmed new seasons of Abbott Elementary, The Conners, The Good Doctor, Grey's Anatomy, Not Dead Yet, The Rookie, Station 19, Will Trent, and acquired program 9-1-1 will air in the future. However, the future of The Rookie: Feds and Home Economics seem like they will remain uncertain until scripted programming returns to the network.

ABC's decision to air Abbott Elementary reruns on Wednesday nights underscores how big of a hit the sitcom in particular has been for the network. It also shows ABC is still dedicated to providing scripted entertainment, even if that has to be in the form of reruns. While Fall 2023 may not have any new scripted programs for ABC, the network is still hoping their unscripted lineup can make up for the lack of scripted content.
