Fans who have wanted to see Batman and Catwoman eschew the drama and get back to the basics are about to have their wish granted. Ever since their big wedding didn’t pan out, it’s been an endless parade of missed connections and hurt feelings and fans’ frustrations at Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle’s inability to work things out are mounting.
To be fair, the Absolute Universes’ take on Catwoman, and though its only a few breadcrumbs of information, it’s enough to get fans of the couple seriously excited, as it looks like Batman and Catwoman are about to be an official couple in the Absolute Universe, giving them and their fans the fresh start everyone desperately needs.
Catwoman is Coming to the Absolute Universe and She's Got Eyes for Batman
Things are (Finally) Looking Good for Bruce and Selina
Comic book fans everywhere have been positively buzzing about Absolute Batman, DC’s latest overhaul of the Dark Knight. This series is set on an alternate Earth that’s been shaped by Darkseid’s energy, thus making things incredibly harder for the panoply of DC heroes. In Bruce Wayne’s case, he doesn’t have the privilege of Wayne Enterprises, nor the family fortune to help his war on crime, so to operate as Batman, he’s had to get creative on his minimal budget. But that’s not the only change that’s been made to Batman’s history in the Absolute Universe.

In this world, Batman is childhood friends with many of the people he’s enemies with in the Prime DC Universe, such as Harvey Dent, Waylon Jones, and Eddie Nygma. One member of the gang from his youth is Selina Kyle, and her closeness with Bruce earned the duo relentless teasing from their peers. While nothing ever developed between the two, Bruce and Selina were depicted as the closest of the friends, with Selina being there for Bruce after his father was killed in a mass shooting at a zoo.
...Absolute Batman #9 will flesh out Selina in the Absolute Universe.
Selina hasn’t made an appearance as an adult in Absolute Batman just yet, but Scott Snyder recently discussed the future of the series on the Comic Book Couples Counseling podcast and revealed that Absolute Batman #9 will flesh out Selina in the Absolute Universe. Not only will it present Selina as an incredibly successful world traveler who is starting to come into her own as Catwoman, but this issue will actually show her in a relationship with Batman, something shippers have to be undoubtedly pleased with.
Absolute Batman is a Breath of Fresh Air Compared to the Main DCU
Bruce and Selina's Last Few Years Haven't Been Great
While Batman has had a lot of love interests in his life, the one person who truly captured his heart was Catwoman. For years in the Prime DC Universe, the two played games of cat and mouse during Selina’s escapades as a jewel thief with Batman attempting to bring her to justice. Through years of back and forth, the two developed feelings for one another, feelings that ultimately resulted in Bruce confessing his identity as Batman to Catwoman and officially beginning a relationship with his longtime (metaphorical) partner-in-crime.
Batman revealed his identity to Catwoman in the landmark Batman #615!
Several years after the two became an official item, Batman decided it was time to make their partnership official and proposed to Catwoman in a moment that stunned the comic book world. However, despite months of anticipation, the wedding didn’t go through after Bane manipulated Catwoman into thinking Bruce couldn’t be Batman if he wasn’t happy. It was a dark time for the duo once they split and, unfortunately, Batman and Catwoman's matrimonial troubles paled in comparison to the dark events that awaited them.
...Batman took issue with Selina’s unilateral decision and hit her operation hard, causing a small war to break out between the Bat-Family.
While Batman took a brief absence from Gotham, Catwoman began an operation that re-trained henchmen into cat burglars that stole exclusively from the elite, making the city’s villains flounder. While Gotham’s crime rates plunged, Batman took issue with Selina’s unilateral decision and hit her operation hard, causing a small war to break out between the Bat-Family. It was a trying and controversial time, but things eventually settled. When all was said and done, Batman and Catwoman made up and are on friendly , but they’re nowhere near ready to rekindle the romance they once shared.
The Absolute Universe is Filling a Void for Bat/Cat Fans
This is What Fans Want to See From DC's New Line
While there’s not much that can be done in the Prime DC Universe for Bruce and Selina at the moment, the Absolute Universe presents a fantastic opportunity for fans. This world has a Batman and a Catwoman who aren’t weighed down by so much drama and bitterness from the past. Sure, fans don’t exactly know the entire history of Absolute Selina and Bruce. But chances are it’s nowhere near as messy as what’s gone on between the Prime Universe Batman and Catwoman.
...Bruce and Selina have a chance at finding happiness that their counterparts can’t seem to find...
At the end of the day, fans like the Bat/Cat couple. They play well off of each other and there’s something fun about seeing these two chase after one another. But in the Prime DCU, there are hurt feelings, mistakes, and regrets that prevent the two from thriving right now. As dire as the Absolute Universe is, its versions of Selina and Bruce are free from all that, and they can just focus on what makes them, and the fans, happy. Namely, a ionate romance between the two DC icons.
Granted, there’s nothing that says there won’t be drama between the Absolute Universe’s Batman and Catwoman, because in this twisted world, it’s extremely likely there will be. But at the very least, Bruce and Selina have a chance at finding happiness that their counterparts can’t seem to find right now. After the last couple of years and all the ups and downs Prime Bruce and Selina have been through, fans will take whatever fresh start the Absolute Universe offers Catwoman and Batman.
