Warning! Spoilers ahead for Absolute Green Lantern #1!Fans are finally getting to meet the Absolute Universe versions of the second wave of Absolute titles. But what changes have come for everyone's favorite heroes and what does that mean for their future in this dark world?
In Absolute Green Lantern #1 by Al Ewing and Jahnoy Lindsay, a flashback properly introduces readers to fan-favorite Lanterns. In this universe, several fan-favorite Earth-based Lanterns are all friends, even though they don't belong to any kind of Corps.
In the Absolute Universe, Hal Jordan is a collectibles' dealer (specializing in toys). Jo Mullein is a former police officer while Guy Gardner is an active duty officer. John Stewart is still seemingly an architect in this world, but while treating his friends to lunch, their town is practically crushed by a large object shaped like a Green Lantern symbol.
The Green Lanterns are All Still Friends, But They've Got No Corps
Hal and His Pals' Friendship is About to Be Tested Like Never Before
Darkseid's energy permeates through everything in the Absolute Universe, which reflects his ideals such as turmoil and adversity. As such, the few heroes that do live in the Absolute Universe are at a serious disadvantage, since hope is the underdog. Batman lacks his family's wealth, the Flash has no legacy to guide him, and detective John Jones is losing his mind as an alien parasite messes with his mind. But the heroes have still been able to survive this world through hard work and determination, though their battles have only begun and there’s plenty of threats they haven’t faced yet.
It's interesting that this world has removed the Corps from the Green Lanterns' lives, but still allowed them to come together as friends. Before the Green Lantern came to Evergreen, things seemed okay, with Hal in a job he liked and Guy seemingly thriving as a cop. But as the issue shows, the arrival of the Green Lantern is throwing a major challenge their way and, unfortunately, they don't have any Guardians or a Book of Oa to tell them what they need to know. All the Green Lanterns have is their friendship to help them survive the Absolute Universe.
The Green Lanterns' Different Lives Have Given Them The Bond They Need
There's No Corps, But They At Least Have Each Other
Despite the wildly different paths the Lanterns' lives have taken, what's important to note is that Hal, Jo, John, and Guy (heck, maybe even Kyle) all have each other. While the Absolute Universe heroes don't have everything, they always have the most important elements and, for the Green Lanterns, that's the bond they share with their fellow Corps . They may not have met on the battlefield, but these Lanterns have a friendship just as strong as their Prime Universe counterparts, and that may just be enough to help the Green Lanterns survive the Absolute Universe.
