Wrath of the Druids expansion. Now, another alleged leak has claimed to reveal what this unannounced content could be about.
Popular Ubisoft leaker j0nathan reported that Ubisoft's release schedule had suffered serious setbacks, and there may not be a new Assassin's Creed game release until after 2022. That update followed an earlier report alleging that the developer planned to set the next entry of the franchise in during the Third Crusade between 1191 and 1199. COVID-19 related workflow interruptions have supposedly hindered the production of that rumored installment, which led Ubisoft to rework its plans into a potential DLC or spinoff title of AC Valhalla, code-named "Meteor."
An anonymous 4chan claimed to reveal Ubisoft's plans for Meteor on April 20. The alleged leaks were picked up on other social channels like Assassin's Creed Ragnarok, fans have been conditioned to expect leaks to emerge about the series. Here's what the rumored Meteor DLC for Assassin's Creed Valhalla might be like and when it could be released.
[Warning: Spoilers for Assassin's Creed Valhalla below.]
Assassin's Creed Meteor DLC Plot & Gameplay Explained
The rumored Meteor DLC was said to take AC Valhalla protagonist Eivor to Iceland and focus heavily on Nordic folklore. Players will allegedly be transported to many Norse realms, including Niflheim, Helheim, and Nidavelir, which sounds suspiciously similar to Santa Monica Studio's 2018 reboot of God of War. Still, this isn't totally far-fetched.
Eivor was revealed to be a reincarnation of the Norse god Odin in Assassin's Creed Valhalla. It turns out Odin was a high-ranking Isu, too - a member of the advanced species who established the first civilization on Earth in Assassin's Creed's lore and has long been a mysterious part of the series. Ubisoft could use AC Valhalla's Meteor DLC to expand the Isu's backstory and even explain its origins. The leaker claimed that "Meteors play an important role" in the DLC, which could tease the Isu species might be extraterrestrials.
Assassin's Creed Meteor DLC: When Will It Release?
All of that remains to be seen, but Assassin's Creed fans may not have to wait much longer. The 4chan post claimed that Ubisoft would announce its plans for the Meteor DLC during its June 12 Ubisoft Forward presentation and target an "early 2022" release date. That timeline might be a bit ambitious given Ubisoft's announced DLC roap for AC Valhalla.
After the May 7 release of Warth of The Druids, the company promised to deliver The Siege of Paris expansion. That second AC Valhalla DLC expansion is expected to launch during the summer of 2021, but given how the first Assassin's Creed Valhalla DLC faced delays, it may also suffer a setback. The 4chan leaker described Meteor as "the biggest DLC for Assassin's Creed yet" and will be sold apart from the other two DLCs at $40. That sounds like a monumental feat to accomplish six or so months after The Siege of Paris, which casts some doubt on the accuracy of these leaks.
Assassin's Creed Meteor DLC: What Studio Is Developing It?
Finally, the leak mentioned that Ubisoft's Sofia studio is simultaneously leading the development of Meteor while also working on an even bigger project, which is a logistical red flag. Sofia had just under 200 employees, according to a 2019 Ubisoft corporate memo, while Assassin's Creed Valhalla's lead developer, who is also in charge of the DLCs, Ubisoft Montreal, employs several thousand people.
If it will take Ubisoft Montreal almost a year to finish off all of Assassin's Creed Valhalla's DLCs, how could a studio a fraction of its size be expected to complete the game's largest expansion in the same time frame? The final development details of the Meteor expansion were dubious claims, but fans of the series may only need to wait until the June 12 Ubisoft Forward to know for sure.
