Some very popular and well-known film stars out there, ranging from Jackie Chan to Robert Downey Jr., are way more than just skilled actors. They also have a huge hoard of other talents, including singing and playing instruments.
Nonetheless, it came as quite a shock to many fans and s on Reddit that actors like Jeremy Renner from Hawkeye have not only powerful vocals but also released albums and singles in addition to their careers on the big screen. It makes audiences wonder what other abilities these stars have hidden up their sleeves.
Ewan McGregor
Ewan McGregor is most widely known for his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Beauty and the Beast adaptation.
Redditor JediTigger expresses their surprise at seeing the actor in Moulin Rouge, describing, "and young Obi-Wan Kenobi was opening his mouth to sing...my jaw fell open so hard". It may come as quite a shock to many Star Wars fans who don't know much about the actor's history that he has quite an incredible singing voice.
Scarlett Johansson
This Scarlett Johansson has a huge repertoire of movies in a variety of different genres, from action to comedy and more, but she's also a singer.
Johansson has released two albums, "Anywhere I Lay My Head" and "Break Up" as well as a few EPs and singles. In her role as Ash in the Sing movies, she reveals her powerful vocals with the song "Set It All Free". Redditor PrognosticatorofLife says she has a "great voice" and Hypranormal agrees, saying "she has a whole album of Tom Waits covers which I thoroughly enjoyed".
Stephanie Beatriz
Up until her performances in Brooklyn Nine-Nine where she plays the tough detective Rosa Diaz. Even Reddit bitbydeath says they're "used to hearing her extremely deep voice as Rosa Diaz in Brooklyn Nine-Nine", and were surprised to hear Beatriz's singing voice.
In the Disney movie Encanto, Beatriz's voice is put on prominent display as she voices the main character Mirabel. It's evident from her songs that Beatriz has a wide range of talents apart from just acting.
Jeremy Renner
Many recognize actor Jeremy Renner as the character Hawkeye from the MCU, though he is a singer-songwriter, keyboardist, guitarist, and drummer in addition to being an actor. Redditor mtte1020 says that they "saw [Renner] in serious and action movies, so imagine my surprise that the dude can sing!".
Renner released two albums in 2020, "Live for Now" and "The Medicine", and has performed songs in many films, including "American Pie" in Love Comes to the Executioner. A cover he sang of "House of the Rising Sun" has recently grown in popularity since being used in the third season of the show The Umbrella Academy.
Andrew Garfield
In addition to playing Spider-Man in Tick, Tick... Boom! which won him various awards including a Golden Globe.
Interestingly enough, Garfield learned how to sing and play the piano specifically for the role through lessons and vocals coaches for a year (Decider). As Redditor imakefilms says, "he's shockingly good in Tick Tick Boom considering it's literally his first time singing...he's got a...solid voice". It's amazing to see what other talents this Spider-Man actor has hidden.
Anya Taylor-Joy
Last Night in Soho where she covers Petula Clark's "Downtown".
Her performance is hauntingly beautiful, and even Redditor austinrose7 says "that whole sequence was angelic, like a dream really". Up until this movie, many fans did not know of Taylor-Joy's ability to sing, and the fact that she can do so in a magnificent way in addition to her acting talent is awing.
Taron Egerton
Taron Egerton is known for his role in the Rocketman. Though before his performance in the musical, many did not know of Egerton's singing abilities, with even a on Reddit saying they "had no clue our young Kingsman had such great vocals".
In Rocketman, Egerton does a great job portraying Elton John both through acting and singing. With performances of iconic songs like "Rocketman" and "Tiny Dancer", Egerton uses his powerful voice to perfectly embody the singer. This eventually led to his win at the 2020 Golden Globes for Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy.
Jackie Chan
Jackie Chan is one of the best and most recognizable action film stars, known for his skills in martial arts and as a stuntman. But, as Redditor Traditional_World783 says, "a lot of people don't know Jackie Chan can sing" and is a classically trained opera singer (worldkings.org).
He has released twenty albums in a variety of different languages, including both Mandarin, Japanese, and English, and often sings theme songs for his films. In the Chinese version of Disney's Mulan, he sang "I'll Make a Man Out of You" for the movie's soundtrack. Additionally, he even performed at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
Robert Downey Jr.
This Sherlock Holmes films. But, Robert Downey Jr. is more than just talented as an actor, he also has crazy good vocals.
On Reddit, ApeOver shares that "Robert Downey Jr...sang an old String song on stage and killed it". In his performance of "Driven to Tears", watchers can hear how powerful his vocals are. Downey even released an album back in 2004 consisting of songs he wrote as well as covers, including a cover of Charlie Chaplin's "Smile" where Downey plays the piano in the background.
Chris Pine
This actor, known for his part in the Into the Woods musical in 2014. In the movie, he played Cinderella's Prince and performs the song "Agony" alongside Billy Magnussen as Rapunzel's Prince.
Redditor mtte1020 says they "did a double take on the clip of Chris Pine singing!". It was shocking to many that Chris Pine had a powerful singing voice in addition to being an actor, and it was especially memorable that Pine would reveal his vocals in the silly and hilarious "Agony" waterfall scene.
