MCU project. The actor was part of the Marvel Television series for seven seasons. Agents of SHIELD concluded in August 2020 with a two-part series finale at the end of season 7.

Introduced in the Agents of SHIELD pilot, Leo Fitz was a member of Agent Phil Coulson's (Clark Gregg) hand-picked team assigned to handle smaller and more clandestine threats that the Avengers weren't needed for in the earlier phases of the MCU. As one of SHIELD's top scientific minds, Fitz and then-close friend Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) handled any scientific tasks or analyses Coulson's team faced, and the pair grew closer amid HYDRA uprisings, the dawn of the Inhumans, Kree interference, and the horrors of the Darkhold. With Agents of SHIELD being added to Disney+ alongside Netflix's Marvel series, there has been a renewed interest in the show and whether it may play a role in the MCU's future, though one star has recently revealed that he has no interest in returning.

In an interview with Digital Spy about the project The Control Room, De Caestecker stated that he would not return to the role in the MCU if the opportunity occurred. Revealing that his reluctance isn't due to him having a bad time on the series, the actor said that he was content with how his and Henstridge's characters' story was resolved, and would not like to potentially tamper with their fates. De Caestecker also revealed where he feels that Fitz and Simmons would be in the current state of the MCU, saying that he feels both would have retired from service. Check out De Caestecker's response below.

"I think I would say probably no. And not that I didn't have a fantastic time doing it.

I think, after everything that happened to those two characters [Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons], they really gave them a happy ending. And I think it would be so sad to mess with that again. It's not fair...

I'm not sure they would survive it this time. So I like the idea that they're living a life of normality outside of the SHIELD."

While De Caestecker may not return, The Punisher, hoping that new fans can enjoy the series for the first time.

Despite the later series' nebulous canon compliance with the current state of the MCU, Agents of SHIELD remains a firm fan favorite after quickly setting itself apart from the MCU and standing on its own merits. With fans campaigning for the return of characters like Mockingbird (Adrianne Palicki), there is interest in seeing the characters become key players in the MCU again. While De Caestecker's decline to return may be disheartening to some, his desire to leave Fitz and Simmons with a happy ending is an understandable reason.
