Fans may believe this was to do with the show trying to avoid Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. may have more longevity for it. Still, all fans know is that the series won't return for a long time. Now, though, at least there's a release window fans can look forward to next summer.

On Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 6 started production last month, the July release window has not been confirmed by ABC - and likely won't for some time. See Henstridge's comment below.
So far, little is officially known about Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 6. The show did promote casting breakdowns for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. hint that the team may be going up against some seriously formidable mercenaries.
In of the cast beyond Ward, it seems many of the S.H.I.E.L.D. staples will be sticking around in some form or another. Although a major shocker of the Gregg's Phil Coulson will be back for season 6, and if he is, in what capacity. Though Gregg said he met with the series' showrunners following his season 5 finale sendoff, it's possible he'll only be involved as a director on the show going forward or only appear in flashback scenes. Unfortunately, for now fans will just have to wait and see.
Although Marvel and ABC are remaining tight-lipped about Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 6, now that the cast is back at work, we may learn more. As indicated by Henstridge, it will be little less than a year until the show returns, but in that time, fans may see the show teased by the cast and the creatives involved. However, any official announcements - beyond casting - likely won't arrive until much closer to the July 2019 premiere window.
