Marvel's Agents of SHIELD Already Renewed For Season 7

Marvel's Marvel Cinematic Universe, but not the last. Still, as Marvel TV has branched out to include shows on Netflix, Hulu and Freeform, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has remained the flagship series.

For five seasons, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has followed a team of agents lead by Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg), an MCU character who made his debut in the movies before moving over to TV. His original team consisted of Daisy Johnson (Chloe Bennet), Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen), Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) and Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker), but has since added Alphonso "Mack" MacKenzie (Henry Simmons), Elena "Yo-Yo" Rodriguez (Natalia Cordova-Buckley) and save the world from being destroyed. Although it's unclear what's planned for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 6, fans can rest assured there's plenty more story to tell.

Marvel and ABC announced today that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been renewed for season 7, ahead of the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 6 is confirmed to premiere in the summer 2019 window, it's unclear when season 7 will air, though it seems likely ABC would aim for winter 2020 at the earliest, and summer 2020 at the latest.

As of now, it's not known what Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 6 will entail. Since it doesn't premiere until next summer, after Avengers 4 hits theaters, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5 ended before the events of Infinity War, the show is free to tell a new story largely unburdened by the movies. That is, of course, assuming Avengers 4 doesn't have as massive of an impact on the larger MCU as Infinity War's ending.

Still, while there are many stories Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. can tell now across two seasons - even if they're shorter seasons - there's not much the show hasn't done already. They've traveled to the future, to space, to an alternate reality in which Hydra ruled, and dealt with lifelike robots called LMDs. And that was only in the last two seasons. Previous outings of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. delved into magic to introduce Ghost Rider (a character fans would no doubt love to see return) and the history of Inhumans once the human-Kree hybrid race were made known on Earth.

All that said, there's plenty of material in the comics from which Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. can draw inspiration for seasons 6 and 7. The show can either revisit a character or storyline from its own past or forge an entirely new path. Either way, fans of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. are no doubt pleased there's now two seasons to look forward to over the next few years.
