Aggretsuko is a series that has resonated with anime fans ever since its debut in 2018. The adorable red panda stuck in an ing job has proven to be one of the most relatable anime characters as Aggretsuko's title character voices her frustrations and burnout through late-night death metal karaoke. Now, the series is coming to an end with goals to wrap up all loose ends. The biggest revelation though is how the series officially confirms Retsuko and Haida are a couple.
Aggretsuko season five has confirmed that between the fourth season finale and season premiere, Haida and Retsuko have finally gotten together. It's unknown how much time has ed, but based on Haida's current addiction to an online game, it can be assumed that it's only been about a month or two. Retsuko is still in the throes of a new romance as noted by her parents when she comes to visit with a smile on her face, and the two are officially being labeled as boyfriend and girlfriend. This is a compelling romance because the two share remarkable chemistry together, and to see it finally on-screen after four seasons of entertaining a "will-they-won't-they" dynamic is refreshing.
Retsuko and Haida's Relationship Corrects Season Four's Failures
The best part about Haida and Retsuko starting the season off in a new relationship is that it immediately rights the wrongs of the biggest criticism fans had from season four. Every episode would constantly go back and forth between the two deciding if their relationship would be something more. At one point, Retsuko would state she wants to just stay friends. Not too long after that, the two look like they're about to date only for Haida's flirtation with committing fraud to help the company pushing that notion away. It was just a frustrating season that felt like it didn't know what it wanted to do with the characters aside from showing the difference between Aggretsuko's Haida and Tadano. Giving the two a chance to finally be a couple is a great way to open up the season because it gives fans a chance to see how the two work together.
Retsuko and Haida's Love is Rushed But Welcome
The unfortunate thing about finally bringing the two together in the first episode of the final season though is that it feels like certain important aspects are just implied. When fans were last left off with Aggretsuko's main characters, it was fairly open-ended about where things would go. While it was relieving to see that the two didn't break off their friendship following Haida's poor decisions, it left fans without a clear-cut answer on whether the two ended up becoming something more. So, when the show begins with them already in the relationship, it's difficult not to feel like it's a bit rushed. Had the season begun with a short prologue showing the two beginning their fling before cutting to a couple months later, things would have felt a bit smoother.
Regardless, it's nice to finally see this romance between Retsuko and Haida finally bloom after constant ups and downs. This is a development that fans have been anticipating ever since Haida professed his love to her from the hospital at the end of the first season and leading into Aggretsuko's Christmas special, and it's exciting to see them come so far. Aggretsuko's final season began on the perfect note by making this fan-favorite romance official, and it's an excellent way to begin Retsuko's swan song.
