problems with the sequel trilogy. The Palpatine plot twist was disappointing in my view, but there were a host of other issues with the movie as well, many of which had to do with the trilogy changing hands multiple times and the inconsistent story that followed.

Although many of Star Wars' recent TV shows have been set in the New Republic era, between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, there's still plenty of work to be done to properly set up the sequel trilogy. As Ahsoka season 2 may very well be the furthest along in the New Republic era so far, the show could be the perfect Star Wars project to bridge the sequels to all that has come before. If that's the case, one major character from Ahsoka could be the key to this connection.

Grand iral Thrawn's Threat Can Only Go So Far

In the sequel trilogy, there is no indication that Thrawn ever took over. Ahsoka, and perhaps other projects like The Mandalorian & Grogu, will no doubt retcon this era somewhat to indicate that a major battle did occur, even if it wasn't mentioned throughout the sequel trilogy. Even in that case, it's clear that Thrawn doesn't ultimately come out victorious, as he's not in the sequels whatsoever, and other villains, such as Snoke and eventually Palpatine, are the ones with the power.

Ahsoka Season 2 Could Give Thrawn An Incredible Legacy

Thrawn Could Connect The Dots In The Sequel Trilogy In The Perfect Way

First Order rally in The Force Awakens.

The fact that Thrawn isn't in the sequels and therefore clearly doesn't win in the end could make the stakes for Ahsoka season 2 seem much lower. Yet, there is one possibility for this story that could not only make the show more compelling but also make the sequels so much more interesting. Perhaps Thrawn does 'win' in a sense, bringing together the Imperial remnants to establish the First Order.

Perhaps Thrawn does 'win' in a sense, bringing together the Imperial remnants to establish the First Order.

Were that the case, it would give Thrawn an incredible legacy. This would also explain why the sequel trilogy's First Order feels like such a copycat of the Empire (one of the biggest complaints about The Force Awakens, which was applied to the similar characters as well). In this case, Thrawn would be trying to replicate what Palpatine had once built. This would also make Ahsoka season 2 a type of villain origin story for the sequels, the First Order in particular, which would be a brilliant connective thread.

This may also lead into The Mandalorian & Grogu, depending on how the timeline of these movies and shows is structured. If Star Wars was going to have such a major reveal about the sequel trilogy, it would make sense for this to be done in a movie rather than in a show. Perhaps Ahsoka season 2 will lay the groundwork for Thrawn's power grab, and The Mandalorian & Grogu will depict the full-fledged battle.

Star Wars Still Needs To Connect To The Sequels

The Sequel Trilogy's Reception Hasn't Changed All That Much

Star Wars has made great strides towards improving some of the issues with the sequel trilogy in recent years through the franchise's TV shows. Shows like Star Wars: The Bad Batch, for example, have worked to explain Palpatine's return through Project Necromancer. Those problems still haven't been entirely resolved, though, and the perception of the sequels as some of Star Wars' worst movies remains.

This could be one major way for Star Wars to address this continued negative reception of the sequels. By giving Thrawn a major hand in the events of the sequels, Ahsoka season 2 could give the sequels a bit more legitimacy and better set the stage for the rise of the First Order and the fall of the New Republic. Hopefully, Ahsoka season 2, and perhaps a number of other Star Wars projects will reveal that Grand iral Thrawn himself was the one to begin the rise of the First Order.
