Disney director, John Musker discusses how Robin Williams' Genie was a key factor in establishing Aladdin's legacy. Regarded by many as one of Disney's greatest animated releases, Aladdin hit theaters in 1992 and told the story of its titular hero, a young man who discovers a magical lamp and is subsequently granted three wishes from the genie who is trapped within it. The Academy Award-winning film saw Scott Weinger and Linda Larkin lend their voices to Aladdin and Princess Jasmine respectively, alongside William's Genie.
As Aladdin celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, Musker, one of the film's directors, has opened up about various aspects of the project's creation and touched on the film's incredible legacy. Speaking to Yahoo!, Musker discussed Williams' heartfelt performance as Genie, praising the actor's skillful mix of comedy and heart, which the director believes has been key to Aladdin's longevity as a film. "I think the idea of giving a heartfelt performance and even the idea of singing appealed to him. His sweetness and ability to reach into that part of his being was crucial to the film lasting. If it was just comedy, I don’t think it would’ve endured but because he really got that feeling of his big heart, sweetness, his concern for Aladdin, their friendship and his investment in Aladdin’s future across, it’s one of the keys of the film’s longevity."
