Disney director, John Musker discusses how Robin Williams' Genie was a key factor in establishing Aladdin's legacy. Regarded by many as one of Disney's greatest animated releases, Aladdin hit theaters in 1992 and told the story of its titular hero, a young man who discovers a magical lamp and is subsequently granted three wishes from the genie who is trapped within it. The Academy Award-winning film saw Scott Weinger and Linda Larkin lend their voices to Aladdin and Princess Jasmine respectively, alongside William's Genie.
As Aladdin celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, Musker, one of the film's directors, has opened up about various aspects of the project's creation and touched on the film's incredible legacy. Speaking to Yahoo!, Musker discussed Williams' heartfelt performance as Genie, praising the actor's skillful mix of comedy and heart, which the director believes has been key to Aladdin's longevity as a film. Musker continued that it was largely William's additions to the character that have since proved "crucial" to the film's ongoing legacy. Check out Musker's quote below:
"I think the idea of giving a heartfelt performance and even the idea of singing appealed to him. His sweetness and ability to reach into that part of his being was crucial to the film lasting. If it was just comedy, I don’t think it would’ve endured but because he really got that feeling of his big heart, sweetness, his concern for Aladdin, their friendship and his investment in Aladdin’s future across, it’s one of the keys of the film’s longevity."
Why Robin Williams' Genie Remains One Of His Best Roles
Williams' immeasurable talent, alongside his many standout projects, meant that the actor had established an incredible legacy prior to his untimely ing in 2014. Just which project Williams is perhaps best known for could differ from person to person, as the actor's impressive career saw him dominate the industry with beloved projects such as Mrs. Doubtfire, Dead Poets Society, Jumanji, Hook, and Good Will Hunting, with the latter having earned him an Academy Award for Best ing Actor. Despite these other projects, Williams' appearance as Genie remains, for many, one of his most memorable performances.
Williams was known for his skillful improvisation and quick wit and the character of Genie contains many elements of the actor's humor and personality, making him an instantly loveable character and not just simply an outlet for comic relief. While Genie certainly shines on his own, his friendship with Aladdin, as Musker discusses, makes even more of a case for Genie's importance. While the film naturally has audiences rooting for Aladdin and Jasmine to finally get their happily ever after, Aladdin and Genie’s relationship is arguably more central to the film as a whole as it offers a unique look at the power of friendship. Thirty years on, Genie's charisma and the fast-paced fun of his appearance continue to enchant audiences, both young and old.
Musker's kind words about Williams' impact on Aladdin are certainly echoed by audiences around the world who found both comfort and laughter in Genie. Williams' freedom in bringing this character to life has meant that Genie has become one of Disney's more iconic animated heroes and this is sure to continue even as the studio gradually adds more exciting characters to its roster. Williams' legacy will forever be felt across Hollywood history, and although his endless talent saw him lead numerous projects to success, his role as Genie will forever be ed as one of his greatest performances.
