The best Alan Tudyk movies and TV shows include a strong mix of comedy and action roles and a career full of animated voiceover roles. Tudyk got his start in the entertainment industry in 1997 when he picked up a role in the independent film 35 Miles from Normal, which earned him more attention, including a role in the Robin Williams film Patch Adams, where he played one of the patients in that medical comedy-drama. He got his biggest notice thanks to his ing role in Heath Ledger’s A Knight’s Tale in 2001.

However, most people know Tudyk from his television roles and his animated voice projects. For his television roles, his most popular are as Wash in Firefly and as Harry in Resident Alien, making him a popular actor for sci-fi and genre fans. He also has several great voice roles, in everything from Ice Age and Wreck-It Ralph to Zootopia and the new DCU animated series Creature Commandos, where he voices Doctor Phosphorus.

Few people could have expected that the animated Harley Quinn series on Max would become as popular as it did. It outlasted all the other DC Universe series that were moved to Max when that former streaming service moved away from movies and series. In the series, Kaley Cuoco stars as Harley Quinn after Joker breaks up with her, and she moves on her own with her best friend and possible romantic partner, Poison Ivy (Lake Bell).

Alan Tudyk's Clayface is getting his own DCU project.

Season 5 premieres in 2025, and the third biggest name in the voice cast after Cuoco and Bell is Alan Tudyk. He voices several characters in the series. Tudyk voices everyone from Joker and Clayface to Calendar Man, Doctor Trap, Condiment King, Firefly, and Ocean Master. He was such a beloved voice actor on the series that James Gunn gave him more roles in a later series and has tapped him to return to the role of Clayface in the DCU.

Alan Tudyk had proven his comedy chops in 2001 with A Knight’s Tale, and he showed how great he was at slapstick comedy in the 2004 movie Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story. The movie stars Vince Vaughn as Peter, a man who owns a small gym but loses it when he defaults on his mortgage. This leads to his rival, White Goodman (Ben Stiller), buying the property to tear it down and build a parking lot there for his Globo Gym across the street.

Peter makes a deal with White to win his building back, and it all comes down to a dodgeball competition. While White has the biggest and strongest at his disposal, Peter has a group of misfits, including Steve “Pirate” Cowan (Tudyk), who is basically a guy who dresses and acts like a pirate and has the anger issues that Tudyk has slipped into many of his best characters over the years. He steals almost every scene in which he appears in Dodgeball.

The movie that helped introduce Alan Tudyk to the world came with his appearance in the 2001 medieval action comedy A Knight’s Tale. Brian Helgeland (L.A. Confidential) stepped behind the camera to direct this movie, which stars Heath Ledger as a squire whose master, Sir Ector, has died. William then decides to pretend to be his master and compete for prize money for him and his fellow squires.

Alan Tudyk plays one of these squires, Wat. This is where he mostly mastered his unhinged anger issues comedic trait that he has played out in many of his later movies. A Knight’s Tale is mostly known for bringing comedy and modern-day music into the medieval period, but it also has great performances by its cast, with Ledger, Tudyk, and the brilliant Paul Bettany leading the way. While it received mixed reviews, it has since become a cult favorite.

In 2019, Alan Tudyk took on another role in the DC world, this time in the live-action DC Universe series Doom Patrol. Like Harley Quinn, it moved on to Max after the DC Universe ended its streaming series slate, and it is the best of the live-action DC shows that the former service produced. The series, based on the classic DC Comics of the same name, sees a group of misfit heroes trying to save a world that fears them.

In Doom Patrol, Tudyk is once again someone that no one can see but is mostly just heard. He plays Mr. Nobody, the supervillain, in the first season of the show. He is omnipresent and can travel through the dimensions and alter reality. It is an interesting character because his powers mean he knows he is in a TV series and often talks to the audience. When he is seen, it is Ed Asner who plays the role, but Tudyk always voices him.

Alan Tudyk had yet another role where he was only heard and never seen in the Star Wars universe. He starred in the best of all the Star Wars spinoff movies, Rogue One, as K-2SO. He is a former Imperial enforcer droid who was reprogrammed by Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) to serve the Rebellion. However, when he was reprogrammed, it caused a malfunction where K-2SO would speak his mind, unusual for Imperial droids at the time.

Tudyk will reprise his role as K-2SO in Andor season 2.

Not only did Alak Tudyk voice K-2SO, but he also motion-captured the droid, so while audiences saw the droid, it was Tudyk’s actual movements. Directed by Gareth Edwards, the film was a box office success, making more than a billion dollars at the box office and an 84% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It even earned two Oscar nominations, one for Best Visual Effects. Tudyk will reprise his role as K-2SO in Andor season 2.

Alan Tudyk became a genre favorite thanks to his role in the 2002 sci-fi Joss Whedon series, Firefly. The show has often been listed as the best show canceled before its time, only lasting one season. The biggest complaint is that Fox released the show out of order, and fans gave up on it. It later gained a second life after its cancelation when it was released on home video in the correct order, and it is a cult favorite now.

Tudyk plays Hoban “Wash” Washburne, the pilot of the Serenity for his captain, Malcolm (Nathan Fillion). The series is a space opera but is set up like a Western, and it follows the crew as they travel through space, taking on missions, while trying to avoid the people battling in a galactic civil war. Tudyk also returned for the sequel movie, Serenity, a few years after the show’s cancelation.

Alan Tudyk has appeared in several Disney animated movies. In the 2013 movie Frozen, he appeared as the Duke of Weselton, the scheming Duke who accused Elsa of witchcraft and sent her into hiding in the mountains in the first movie. There was a scene in the film where people mispronounced his name as “Weasel-ton,” which angered him. This led to a funny joke in a later Disney movie, Zootopia.

In 2010, Alak Tudyk and Tyler Labine teamed up in the Eli Craig horror comedy Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil. In this movie, the two play Tucker and Dale, two hillbillies who live in the woods. They are harmless and just want to live their lives, but when a group of kids show up who have watched one too many horror movies, they quickly assume the two are dangerous killers. The students decide they should proactively defend themselves.

This leads to the kids accidentally dying based on their own stupid actions, all while Tucker and Dale look on in horror and confusion. Seeing Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine playing the clueless, mostly kindly hillbillies surrounded by horror and death that completely confuses them helps them deliver some of their best overall movie performances. It received almost all positive reviews as a smart horror comedy that plays out as a perfect slapstick film as well.
