Alan Wake is getting a movie adaptation, and there are already a ton of exciting updates about the latest big screen gaming adventure. The award winner was developed by Remedy Entertainment and concerns novelist Alan Wake as he investigates the mysterious disappearance of his wife in the Pacific Northwest. While being haunted by the loss of his wife, the writer also must contend with the events of his novels which begin to happen in the real world. Shattering the concept of what a video game could be, Alan Wake was already like the best thriller TV shows or movies.

Through additional DLC, the world of Alan Wake expanded, and it shares a universe with Remedy's other hit game, Control. Though movies based on video games used to consistently fail, it appears as if the 2020s are a golden age of video game movies, and Hollywood has churned out hit after hit from recognizable gaming properties. Though Alan Wake may not be the best-selling game of all time, it comes with a ready-made story that is practically begging for an adaptation to the screen. With that in mind, Remedy Entertainment has big plans for Alan Wake and more.

Though details are incredibly scant, it is a logical choice for the next video game movie, considering its plot which is reminiscent of a classic thriller film or TV show.

As video game adaptations continue to be successful, it has now been announced that an Alan Wake movie is officially in the works. The team behind the games, Remedy Entertainment, has branched out into another form of media in a new partnership with Annapurna. The studio that brought such hits as Foxcatcher and American Hustle to the big screen will now be working with Remedy to adapt Alan Wake. Though details are incredibly scant, it is a logical choice for the next video game movie, considering its plot which is reminiscent of a classic thriller film or TV show.

Annapurna also develops video games such as 2022's Stray.

No names are attached to the Alan Wake movie both behind and in front of the camera just yet, and it's unclear where the project currently stands in the development process. Speaking of the new partnership between Remedy Entertainment and Annapurna, Remedy CEO Tero Virtala said:

“At Remedy, our primary focus continues to be what we do best—crafting industry-defining video games that have earned us global recognition. With Remedy taking its first step into movies and TV, the studio is leaping headfirst with several projects at once. Besides the Alan Wake movie, Remedy is also working with Annapurna to develop a TV series based on Control. The cult-classic game concerns the Director of the Federal Bureau of Control, who must use her telekinetic powers to contain various supernatural forces. Control is in the same universe as Alan Wake, and it's unclear if the movie and TV show will also be connected. Additionally, Annapurna will collaborate with Remedy to bring the long-awaited Control 2 video game to life.

Saga Anderson looks down from Alan Wake 2.

Unlike other video game movies which are tasked with extrapolating a story from gameplay with loose storylines, Alan Wake already has a strong and compelling plot. However, its unknown if the movie will directly adapt the first game's storyline or if it will create something entirely new. If the movie follows the game, it will see the titular character return to the mysterious town of Bright Falls, Washington to look for his missing wife. While there, the events of his best-selling novels begin to happen in real-life, sending him down a spiral of madness.
