Actress Sabrina Carpenter is teaming up with Netflix to produce and star in a movie musical version of Alice in Wonderland. Carpenter has had success as both a singer and actress, releasing four studio albums over four years while performing in various movies and TV shows. She starred in Disney’s Girl Meets World before receiving critical acclaim for a ing role in 2018’s The Hate U Give.
Most recently, Carpenter acted in and produced Netflix’s dance comedy Work It, and also made her Broadway debut in Mean Girls before the pandemic shuttered stages. At Last Productions - Carpenter's production company - will be responsible for this new Alice in Wonderland. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Carpenter will star in the film and produce alongside her team from Work It. Writer Ross Evans is behind the screenplay.
So far, the story’s details are few and far between, but the film's setting has been revealed. The movie will be a musical set in modern times, unlike previous iterations of the Lewis Carroll novel. Instead of a fantastical world, the setting will be a music festival called Wonderland. There’s no word yet on which, if any, of the other classic characters will be featured.
For such an iconic tale, Alice in Wonderland has only hit the big screen a few times. The animated Disney version was released in 1951, followed by Tim Burton’s 2010 live-action feature and its 2016 sequel Alice Through the Looking Glass. Being both a musical and modern adaption, this Alice in Wonderland version will definitely depart from the usual story.
