Alien: Romulus Could Be The Franchise's Best Sequel In 38 Years

Alien: Romulus Is Returning To Original, Familiar Elements

Alien: Romulus is returning to the franchise's horror roots, offering a terrifying story about survival that appears most in line with the original movie. The design of the Xenomorph hints at this approach, as it appears to have a look very similar to when the creature was first introduced on the big screen. However, the Alien: Romulus trailer also hints at action inspired by the 1986 sequel Aliens, with a group of characters running from a swarm of Facehuggers during one harrowing scene.

The sequel seems to be pulling most of its inspiration from the first two installments, setting up the possibility that this will be the best entry in 38 years. Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection didn't maintain the same consistency of the previous two movies, while Ridley Scott's prequels Prometheus and Alien: Covenant marked a major divergence from the claustrophobic original premise. However, Alien: Romulus promises a more familiar experience with its premise, with the design of the Xenomorph further reflecting how familiar the new installment will feel.

Alien: Romulus Is Cashing In On A Facehugger Promise Made Back In 2003

New footage of Alien: Romulus involving the facehuggers suggests it will finally be paying off a setup briefly hinted at in Alien 3's special edition.

With so many terrifying and exciting elements being rolled into one movie, Alien: Romulus will have plenty to juggle as it brings a return to form to the franchise. However, because director Fede Álvarez has proven his horror talent with the Evil Dead reimagining and Don't Breathe, it seems the new installment in the sci-fi horror franchise is in good hands. Couple this with a mixture of practical effects and CGI to create the aliens, and the film's Xenomorph alone might be the biggest highlight of the series in a long time.

Alien: Romulus arrives in theaters on August 16.
